Had an awesome adventure taking folks along the former Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway route between Alderwood Manor Station (near Lynnwood transit center) and downtown Seattle, even though the bike gods were channeling their inner Loki to cause multiple mechanical issues to some of my riders (blown tire, front wheel skewer falling off, chain getting stuck between frame & small cog)

That sucks. I really like that trail.
"The Ozaukee Interurban Trail partially collapsed just north of Highland Road, forcing runners and bikers to turn around Wednesday.
Mequon Mayor Andrew Nerbun says it is unclear how long the trail will be closed. The damage could worsen with more rain, and an outside contractor may be needed for repairs."

Weather was decent, so I had a ride down the #interurban to Greenwood for coffee this afternoon. Lots of bikes out. Runners. Dogs getting walks and sniffs. Love to see it.
I dont think I ate enough today though and bonked hard a few miles from home. Struggled to finish and stumbled in the door then straight to the kitchen looking for anything edible to shove in my mouth.

I had a blast today attempting to bike the route taken by the historic Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway from its original start at the former Shirley Hotel in downtown Seattle to the old Everett depot. I also saw some related goodies like one of the original Interurban train cars.
Biking & history are the best!

I had been trying to determine where the #interurban lines went through Lima, OH, but some of the paths didn't make sense. Until I found a map, which showed Lima had interurban service, but also a local #streetcar system that ran until the 1960s. In a city with a population of only ~50,000 people.

A century ago, this photo was taken in Haubstadt, #Indiana. This town had both a #train station and #electric #interurban service, with a population of less than 700.
Now it has over 1,600 people, but has no service of any kind. The station and several of the buildings in this photo are now gone or empty.
Even major cities with populations in the hundreds of thousands sometimes lack basic #rail service. It's painful how much we've lost. -
I found an old photograph online that I think is kinda cool from June 1895 of an #interurban line being built in the middle of the street. I believe this is from #Westerville, #Ohio on South State Street.

@mobileharv I think #interurbans are a vastly underrated form of #transportation. They were fully #electric, provided frequent service (even in small towns), could exceed highway speeds, had widespread service, and could easily shift from providing local intracity service to high speed intercity service. They're also one of the few forms of transit that could work in #rural areas (although theoretically, buses could too).

I found an interesting article from the 1920s discussing #interurban service in a town of 5,000.
"The new train schedule of the [interurban] has given [citizens] something to think about ... The schedule provides everything that anyone could ask for in [convenience] ... With service that is almost half hourly during certain portions of the day, there leaves but little if any room for the necessity of a bus line over the route..."

There was once 2,798 miles of fully #electric #interurban #track in #Ohio. That's more miles than than the current interstate highways in Ohio, and more miles than any other state had.
Not a single town with a population over 10,000 (and many even smaller towns) did not have an interurban line, and many were also served by traditional #rail.
And we lost it all.

I found an old interview in my local library of someone from a nearby town about the #history of the #interurban in our area. So, I have decided to share a portion of it here.
"No vacation trips to this day held so much in store... The interurban brought a deal of prosperity to our local area. It was the first time [our town] had achieved a long-hoped-for system of transportation..."

For a period of time in the early 1900s, it was possible to make a trip solely using EVs all the way from New York to Wisconsin.
