Working in the night, writing my paper. Castorp calls me. I step over to his den, he stretches his head out and puts it into my open hand, ever so trusting. I gently scratch his forehead, he closes his eyes like a cat. I tell him about my worries, and that he is a good boy. He gets out and shakes himself up, as if he is wet from the rain and must shake out the rain. He does his night visit to the garden. When he is back, he gets another cuddle and goes back into his den to sleep. All is well. I go back to my work. What would we do without each other.
