  1. The InternetNZ AGM is scheduled for 13 August. This means that if you, or anyone you know, hasn't joined or renewed their membership, there's still time. There's a 90-day, so if you're an active member by about 13 May you'll still be eligible to vote in the AGM.

Right wing groups will be recruiting again to try to get another candidate onto the InternetNZ Board, with the goal of removing its main function as a civil society organisation focused on equitable access to the internet. So if you're a member, please check that you're current. And if you're not, please consider joining so there's a strong vote at that AGM for a progressive candidate.

  3. Just renewed my #internetnz membership for another 5 years so I can continue to vote for inclusiveness, equity, and Te Korowai o Ipurangi Aotearoa. Anei te manaakitanga!

  6. I fed the #internetnz #agm2025 into a free range open source local LLM and it made this song. #nzpol

  8. After last night’s #InternetNZ activity, I attempted to sign up as a .au member.

Apparently they're having email problems, or just silently decided to drop mine.

  14. Being in Hyderabad isn't in itself a bad thing.

The company website was entirely about "we are a local company" and when I spent a few minutes digging into it all the staff and directors and owners and profits were offshore.

    It's as bad as Google.
    Or Microsoft.
    Or Netflix.
    Or Apple.

A real amendment with teeth would be that websites that serve > 100,000 NZ people must have an office and a director in NZ. But that's not within the #InternetNZ sphere.

  16. It sounds like a good idea: limit ownership of .nz domains to companies with a NZ presence.

But it's super simple to setup an office, slap an accountant on it, boom, you now have a "NZ presence".

I was just investigating one company with a .nz domain and +64 phone number today.

    They're a "NZ presence"
... with an address at a co-working space
... with a VoIP phone number
... and a director located in Hyderabad

  18. (she got to tell him his proposal to change "tikanga" to "dispute resolution" wouldn't even make sense because tikanga informs the dispute resolution but is not dispute resolution) #internetnz

  19. whetū fala neatly eviscerated farrar in under a minute, good for her #internetnz

  20. has anybody told Farrar he could learn new words at any time? #internetnz

  21. Can we bill David Farrar for wasting so much of our time?

3,000 hours at my normal rate ... I'm going on a skiing holiday in the Alps next year!

  22. #internetNZ AGM 2 hours into the first hour of the agenda... (the non controversial part)

  23. No one tells you the real benefits of engaging in student politics while you're at university:
    * Learning about general meetings and seconding motions (handy for the #internetNZ AGM tonight)
    * Understanding and implementing the hare-clarke electoral system for proportional representation
(Thanks @ajd for this blursed knowledge)

  24. While you're waiting for voting in #InternetNZ you can try Rogule for a Rogue-like dungeon:

  25. That's an interesting transcription for Māori, but it did correctly identify "iwi", "hapu", and "Aotearoa".

    #InternetNZ

  26. If it's any consolation I was one of the new #InternetNZ members who signed up this year!

And I've attended an APNIC meeting in the past!

I know what fibre is! (It's found in broccoli.)

  27. Jeez 4000+ new members in 2024-2025 is a terrifying growth for a public organisation. Hoping we scrambled enough. #InternetNZ

  28. interesting 95.6% support for the the motion "that the chairpersons report be received" routine stuff but maybe indicative of not that many dickheads? #InterNetNZ

  29. 4,699 members
    1,062 people on the call
    1,447 voter codes available

Looks like a lot of people were too late signing up to be eligible?
