The InternetNZ AGM is scheduled for 13 August. This means that if you, or anyone you know, hasn't joined or renewed their membership, there's still time. There's a 90-day, so if you're an active member by about 13 May you'll still be eligible to vote in the AGM.
Right wing groups will be recruiting again to try to get another candidate onto the InternetNZ Board, with the goal of removing its main function as a civil society organisation focused on equitable access to the internet. So if you're a member, please check that you're current. And if you're not, please consider joining so there's a strong vote at that AGM for a progressive candidate.

Just renewed my #internetnz membership for another 5 years so I can continue to vote for inclusiveness, equity, and Te Korowai o Ipurangi Aotearoa. Anei te manaakitanga!

After last night’s #InternetNZ activity, I attempted to sign up as a .au member.
Apparently they're having email problems, or just silently decided to drop mine.

I’m quite keen to run for the board of InternetNZ myself, with a platform of:
“Actually don’t vote for me. Vote for anyone from a marginalised group instead.”
-
little bit surprised that the voter turnout was about half - what were the other half paying their dues for? just disinterested after all?
-
Right who’s the nominated person to go and laugh at FSU postings about tonight’s agm? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 OR are we all volunteering 🤣 #InternetNZ

Being in Hyderabad isn't in itself a bad thing.
The company website was entirely about "we are a local company" and when I spent a few minutes digging into it all the staff and directors and owners and profits were offshore.
It's as bad as Google.
Or Microsoft.
Or Netflix.
Or Apple.A real amendment with teeth would be that websites that serve > 100,000 NZ people must have an office and a director in NZ. But that's not within the #InternetNZ sphere.

It sounds like a good idea: limit ownership of .nz domains to companies with a NZ presence.
But it's super simple to setup an office, slap an accountant on it, boom, you now have a "NZ presence".
I was just investigating one company with a .nz domain and +64 phone number today.
They're a "NZ presence"
... with an address at a co-working space
... with a VoIP phone number
... and a director located in Hyderabad -
(she got to tell him his proposal to change "tikanga" to "dispute resolution" wouldn't even make sense because tikanga informs the dispute resolution but is not dispute resolution) #internetnz

Reading in this morning's Waikato Times that the #FreeSpeechUnion "encouraged billionaire Jim Grenon’s investment in the #NZME media group" reminded me that I wanted to join #InternetNZ.

Maybe Aotearoa needs some kind of civil society tech watchdog, a la EFF. NZOSS and InternetNZ do some of that stuff, but they seem somewhat constrained by their other roles.
-
@lightweight obviously I share these concerns ;) So I would focus on educating folks at #LGNZ, #ElectoralCommission etc about the importance of independently auditable voting software *and* hardware. I suspect they see #NZOSS as partisan, since its members and their companies stand to gain financially from a free market in free code voting software. So I would work with #InternetNZ, or another organization not vulnerable to that perceived conflict of interest, to do that education work.
