Iran blocked internet access for over 2,000 hours. 🚫🌐 Traveling from Tehran to Uganda without a car wouldn't take that long. 🚶♂️🇮🇷➡️🇺🇬

Is this where we’re headed too? Speculation that recent outages in Russia were tests for unplugging from internet & global community (similar to what’s already happening in Iran, also China). Population response: “Local media reported that retailers recorded a quick surge in demand for pagers, portable radios, stationary phones, media players and road maps, as the shutdowns gripped the capital.”
…
“Mohiuddin Ahmed, associate professor in cybersecurity at Adelaide University … said internet blackouts could become a "successful" strategy for governments to control domestic political unrest.
"Internet blackouts are put in place so that everyday people can't know what's going on in the rest of the world." “https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/moscow-internet-shutdown-russia-test-censorship/69rjp4wai

“Direct-to-cell satellite internet can bypass censorship and internet shutdowns, connecting ordinary smartphones directly to satellites—no special equipment needed. This technology could save lives in Iran and beyond.”

When the Islamic Republic silences its people with internet blackouts, it should not be given a platform for propaganda. NetBlocks is right to demand transparency from @WSJ: how was the op-ed submitted, and why was the opposition denied equal access? Those who violate universal human rights must not be allowed to lie unchallenged.

A quite interesting source for updates about the internet blackout and censorship in Iran is this Github issue: https://github.com/net4people/bbs/issues/561
The last post includes a graph showing a increasing amount of DNS TXT queries which probably are used for tunneling.
It's great that some people found a way to at least use the internet at probably low speeds but at the same time this is quite frightening because this could mean the internet won't come back as before.

Iran is witnessing a second consecutive night of large-scale protests across major cities. The government has imposed an internet blackout and deployed extensive security forces, yet demonstrators are using satellite links, mesh networks and offline coordination to keep the movement alive. This highlights the growing importance of digital resilience in civic action. - Powered by FG #IranProtests #InternetBlackout #DigitalActivism #HumanRights

Tehran, Babol, Mashad, Hamadan, Kermanshah...and many more cities: There are masses on the street tonight all over #Iran. At the same time the regime has once again shut down the internet in order to prevent information to get in and out of the country. We know from previous protests that they kill the people in silence and darkness. Please be the voice of the brave Iranians- they are risking their lives for freedom.

The recent internet disruptions in Bangladesh have now ended, and just an hour ago, the advisor of the interim government took the oath of office. I've shut down all public proxy servers I was running since regular VPNs like ProtonVPN are functioning fine now. I'll also be shutting down my Akkoma instance at social.mitexleo.one, as I've transitioned to using Mastodon.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to work full-time, part-time, or take on any freelance jobs due to my college exams and the need to prepare for university admissions. This means I'll have to minimize my living expenses, and I won't have any income for at least the next 4-5 months. However, I'll continue to run our public Fediverse instance, buddyverse.one, for as long as possible.
My personal instance also needs an upgrade, as I'm getting a lot of interaction from you all—boosts, likes, and replies! Both my Akkoma and Mastodon instances see CPU and RAM usage spike to 100% when this happens since I'm running on a $5 Linode plan. The current cost for running my Mastodon instance is $10/month (Nanode + Linode Object Storage), and for Buddyverse.one, it's just $5/month. This is a significant reduction from the more than $100/month I used to spend!
I plan to operate a proxy and VPN server again soon. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported me financially and inspired me to fight against censorship in Bangladesh during these challenging times. I'll be forever grateful to you all. 💛
I also plan to work for the poor, minorities, and those who need our help in the future. The Fediverse has truly transformed my life—I’ve never had so much meaningful discussion or interaction, even offline, let alone on Facebook or Twitter. I know I act dumb sometimes, and I ask for your forgiveness for that. Please don't hesitate to let me know if I ever do something wrong or hurt you in any way. I'm open to change.
