  1. From a Mathematical Curiosity to the Foundation of Internet Security 🧮🧐🔐✨

In 1636, Pierre de Fermat made a remarkable observation: if you take an integer a, raise it to a prime power p, and then subtract a, the result is always divisible by p. In other words, for a prime p,

    aᵖ ≡ a (mod p).

    For example, when p = 5:
    2⁵ − 2 = 30, which is divisible by 5, and
    3⁵ − 3 = 240, which is also divisible by 5.

Fermat found this property elegant and tried to spark interest in this curious corner of mathematics. Not everyone was impressed. John Wallis reportedly dismissed such results, remarking, “Big deal; I could find other relationships just as interesting without much effort, and none of them are important.”

About a century later, Leonhard Euler was encouraged by Christian Goldbach to study Fermat’s ideas. Though initially unenthusiastic, Euler soon uncovered deeper structure within them. His work laid much of the foundation for what we now call modern number theory.

  3. 🔍 So, you want to choose a public DNS resolver, huh? Just whip out your crystal ball and predict which of the 29 options won’t sell your data or collapse under a stiff breeze. 🌀 Who knew you needed a PhD in "DNS-ology" to pick one? 😅

As you said, computers just work around these blockades. Passing the #Cloudflare gate does not prove a man's hand clicked on the box.

A machine can get around Cloudflare's blockade and write a post, all automated by a script.

  14. Configuring the Firefox app has become pretty crazy: its privacy-related options -- just like its commercial clutter -- are all over the place, very much like Google does with its original Android system, hoping that you either give up or forget to turn off the occasional switch.

  16. Even though the use of self-signed certificates pinned with a DANE/TLSA record probably is a closed chapter now — browser builders declined to support it due to lagging DNSSEC adoption — I still think it's a better (additional) solution, especially for non-enterprise users wanting to manage their own domains and hosts. Furthermore, it keeps control over domains and certificates where it naturally belongs: locally in the distributed DNS hierarchy.

  18. The 47-day certificate: faster treadmill, same broken foundation

Managing TLS certificates has become pretty crazy: Over the years validity was cut down from several years to two years to one year to half a year now. In a few years it will be only a little more than one month, with the additional requirement to basically continuously prove domain control.

  26. Several years ago I decided that my personal devices must be secure enough to make anyone trying to invade my digital space think is it worth to even try. I know it is not possible to be 100% secure, but I also know that if you make effort to restrict access to your device and data you will be much safer than doing nothing. #InternetSecurity and #privacy is a necessity, not a choice nowadays.
