  1. "This is a tool for reading International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) notation aloud.

It makes it easy to actually hear how words are pronounced based on their phonetic spelling, without having to look up each character in the IPA chart and string the sounds together yourself."

    Super clever and useful.

  2. @dmandl Consonants are actually a lot more gradient than anyone taught you.

The key to understanding phonetic transcription is to remember that the goal is not to encode specific tongue positions. It's to communicate contrasts between two or more pronunciations, contrasts that are relevant to whatever discussion you're having:

  3. Linguistics stuff: I'll never in my life get the vowels in the IPA straight. Consonants are "digital" and are well defined using features (stop/fricative, alveolar/palatal), but "open-mid" and "central" are ridiculously vague to me. #Linguistics #InternationalPhoneticAlphabet

  4. @trochee

    I had this pendant 3D-printed for my girlfriend [now wife]. It's the IPA-letter ɕ or "c with curl" (U+0255), which stands for the voiceless alveolo-palatal sibilant, or the sound normally spelled sj in Danish. | #lingvistik #linguistics #unicode #ipa #internationalphoneticalphabet #sje #voiceless #alveolopalatal #sibilant #consonant #phonetics #phonetic #jewelry #3dprint #3dprinting #ɕ #munk_typography

  5. @hober wrote an article about linking IPA pronunciations to IPA Reader. When I first saw her name linked to IPA Reader, I thought that was cool. I like her implementation for auto-linking!

  7. CW: Question about phonetic transcription

I have a question for linguists out there:

In typical (Canadian English) productions of a word like "worm", which of the following are acceptable? Which do you prefer? Are any of them flatly wrong?

    [wɹ̩m] [wɝm] [wɚm]

If you have a preference, is it based on phonetic differences between the options? Phonological convention? Something else?

  8. I realize I've been including phonetic characters in some of my posts without explanation. If you're not familiar, the #InternationalPhoneticAlphabet (IPA) is a standard way to represent *sounds* (as opposed to letters) consistently across all spoken languages.

The alphabet is maintained by the International Phonetic Association (also IPA).

You can find an interactive version here: internationalphoneticassociati

I like this site for typing on desktop and mobile devices: ipa.typeit.org/full/

  9. CW: Linguist parent win / brag

Doing normal father-son stuff, learning about the Ukrainian alphabet.

Of course I shared with him the Omniglot page for it - omniglot.com/writing/ukrainian

He observed, "The IPA is like Thieves Cant for linguists!"

First of all, yes. It totally is. 💯

Second, I feel very 🏆 right now!

  10. To all the #Lingodons - and especially #Phonodons - out there - do you have an alternative for #IPA as a tag? Not sure if that's sufficiently unique to mark out the International Phonetic Alphabet. I'm half-tempted to use #ifæ, but I feel that would fall flat without context, and if I'm including that I might as well just use the full tag: #internationalphoneticalphabet.

Trying to upgrade my social-media skills - advice, critiques, and commiserations all welcome! 🤓
