I have worked in human rights and war crimes investigations. I know what state-sanctioned cruelty looks like. I know the language perpetrators use to justify it, the machinery that makes it possible, and the excuses they construct when the world finally comes asking questions.
The death penalty is barbarism. Making it a public spectacle is barbarism with a propaganda budget.
It is the state declaring that a human being can be reduced to an object lesson, that killing can be entertainment, that the deliberate destruction of human dignity deserves an audience and applause.
This is what authoritarian regimes do. This is what we condemn in North Korea and Iran. This is the kind of state conduct that belongs in human rights reports, in evidence dossiers, in the historical record of regimes that confused absolute power with the right to do absolutely anything.
And now we are supposed to watch the United States contemplate this road under Hegseth?
You do not get to preach civilisation while staging barbarism. You do not get to invoke the rule of law while turning human beings into props for state violence. You do not get to call it justice simply because the people committing it wear uniforms and the flag behind them is familiar.
I have spent years working with the realities of human rights abuses and war crimes. I have no patience for the convenient fiction that atrocities become less atrocious when committed by the people who claim to represent the good guys.
That is precisely the distinction we must refuse to make.
If the United States crosses this line, the stain will endure. It will outlive the politicians who authorised it, the officers who implemented it, and the propaganda that attempted to dress it up as strength. Every person who knowingly orders, facilitates, or carries out unlawful acts must understand that power is temporary, evidence has a habit of surviving, and accountability is not extinguished by political convenience.
The hunt for accountability must never end in vengeance. It must end in evidence, due process, and justice. No immunity by rank. No exemption by nationality. No convenient amnesia when the perpetrators happen to be our own.
And perhaps this is one reason the US hostility towards the International Criminal Court matters so much. The ICC exists to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression, within its jurisdiction. Its existence poses an uncomfortable question to powerful states: what happens when the people accustomed to judging others find themselves answerable to the same principles?
Human rights are not a membership card for the morally respectable. International law is not a weapon to be used exclusively against one's enemies.
If we condemn state terror in Tehran or Pyongyang, we must condemn it in Washington, too. Otherwise, we are not defending universal principles. We are merely defending our preferred perpetrators.
And I refuse to do that.
No civilised society needs a public execution to prove its strength. No genuine justice requires an audience for a killing. And no flag, uniform, office, or claim of patriotism can turn barbarism into virtue.
I have seen what happens when people convince themselves that the rules do not apply to them.
I will not look away. I will not make excuses. And I will not confuse the power to kill with the right to call oneself just.

But I believe to have a reasonable impression of what is going on in the Middle East and how hypocrite European countries are supporting Israel's genocides - because they fear economic sanctions imposed by Donald Trump (and/or the US leaving NATO), and they want to continue trading with Israel.
