  2. Today is International Chess Day. 20th July 1924 was when FIDE, (Federation International d'Echecs) our governing body, was founded at the 1924 Paris Olympics. So FIDE is celebrating it's centenary today.

While initially a good thing with noble aspirations, FIDE has, like many other governing organisations, become corrupted and hampered by its own bureaucracy and large body of rules.

FIDE has been run by self enriching and self aggrandising individuals for too long while minorities and fringe groups are excluded and/or discouraged from involvement. The fact that the current FIDE President is Russian with ties to Putin, and that no action has been even suggested regarding the participation of Israel in FIDE events is typical of what FIDE has become. Meanwhile, trans players are banned and gender segregation still exists.

    So Happy International Chess Day!!

  4. It's International Chess Day - and somehow, my mind immediately gravitated to Alice through the Looking Glass...

β€œIt’s a great huge game of chess that’s being playedβ€”all over the worldβ€”if this is the world at all, you know. Oh, what fun it is! ... I wouldn’t mind being a Pawn, if only I might joinβ€”though of course I should like to be a Queen, best.”

  5. The Hessisches Landesmuseum #Kassel (GER) owns a couple of #chess sets from the legacy of the landgraves of Hessen-Kassel. The one shown here is made in silver by Nikolaus Ostertag around 1700. Pieces symbolize Romans vs. Africans. Back in 2019 I counted 7 sets in the permanent #exhibition – and according to Antonius van der Linde there are more in the #museum stockrooms. πŸ“· my own. #WorldChessDay #InternationalChessDay2023 #InternationalChessday #ChessHistory #GamesHistory #HistoryOfGames #Schachgeschichte
