  2. "From 1936 to 1945, backed by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, a shadow of inhumanity spread from Spain, gradually engulfing all of Europe.

During these years, a great number of overseas Chinese took part in the struggle on European battlefields. Whether traveling with military units or joining voluntarily, they fought alongside international allies, local soldiers, and civilians against the fascist regimes."

"The Spanish Civil War (1936–39), pitting fascism against the legal Spanish Republic, had a powerful impact on Paul Robeson’s political perspective—not least his change of the lyrics of his most famous song, “Ol’ Man River.” Speaking and singing as an anti-fascist, he journeyed with his wife Essie to embattled Spain in 1938 to support the soldiers of the International Brigades."

"In addition to honouring the international volunteers, the government also recognised its “debt of gratitude” to 18 victims of the dictatorship, among them the poet Federico García Lorca, who was murdered in 1936, and the film-maker Luis Buñuel, who was exiled and had his work censored in Spain."

"At a ceremony in Madrid, the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said of the new citizens: “It will be an honour to call them compatriots. We call for the defence of the same democracy as they did at a time when it is under threat around the world.”

“I felt that if we didn’t lick Franco and stop fascism there, it would spread over lots of the world. And it is bad enough for white people to live under fascism, those of the white people that like freedom and democracy. But Negroes couldn’t live under it. They would be wiped out… From the time I arrived in Spain I felt like a human being, like a man. People didn’t look at me with hatred in their eyes because I was Black, and I wasn’t refused this or refused that because I was Black. I was treated like all the rest of the people were treated, and when you have been in the world for quite a long time and have been treated worse than people treat their dogs, it is quite a nice feeling to go someplace and feel like a human being."
