The @unesco #InternationalDayOfLight is celebrated every year on May 16, the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960.
The basic #research conducted by our scientists at MPL focuses on the interaction between light and matter, with the use and study of #laser #light playing a particularly important role.

💡International Day of Light 💡
Se c’è una giornata che riesce a illuminare (letteralmente!) il nostro calendario con un pizzico di meraviglia, è proprio la International Day of Light, celebrata ogni anno il 16 maggio e promossa da UNESCO per ricordarci quanto la luce sia fondamentale nella nostra vita quotidiana, nella scienza e persino nella creatività. 💡
E sì, siamo tornati anche quest’anno a parlarne partendo dal nostro articolo già pubblicato
perché la luce, si sa, non passa mai di moda… anzi, si reinventa!
🌍 Il tema 2026: luce per un futuro sostenibile
L’edizione 2026 porta con sé un messaggio ancora più potente: la luce non è solo bellezza o tecnologia, ma anche sostenibilità, accesso all’energia e innovazione globale. In diverse iniziative internazionali si parla sempre più di “light for development”, ovvero la luce come strumento per migliorare sanità, istruzione e qualità della vita nelle aree del mondo con meno risorse. 🌱
A Parigi, presso la sede UNESCO, si tiene anche un evento ufficiale con tavole rotonde e incontri scientifici dedicati alle tecnologie basate sulla luce e al loro impatto sociale e ambientale.
🔬 Curiosità luminose che non invecchiano mai
Lo sapevi che questa giornata nasce per celebrare il primo laser funzionante, realizzato nel 1960? Da allora la luce è diventata protagonista di fibre ottiche, medicina, internet e persino dell’esplorazione dello spazio. 🌌
Nel 2026, sempre più scuole, musei e università nel mondo stanno partecipando con installazioni luminose, esperimenti creativi e progetti digitali per avvicinare i giovani alla scienza… ma con stile!
💫 La luce nel nostro quotidiano (e nel nostro mood)
Dalla luce del sole che filtra tra le finestre, alle luci urbane che disegnano le città di sera, questa giornata ci ricorda una cosa semplice: la luce non è solo qualcosa che vediamo… è qualcosa che viviamo.
Ed è anche un invito educato ad “accendere” idee, progetti e nuove visioni, un piccolo promemoria che anche i momenti più bui possono cambiare prospettiva.
💛 In fondo, la International Day of Light non è solo una ricorrenza scientifica: è una celebrazione della curiosità, dell’innovazione e di tutto ciò che illumina il mondo… dentro e fuori di noi.

Today, on the #InternationalDayOfLight, the #Light for #PublicHealth initiative launches. It's an "evidence-based public health messaging on the non-visual effects of ocular light exposure".

Our event for the #internationaldayoflight is in full swing! On Hugenottenplatz in Erlangen, our scientists will be giving exciting short talks on topics related to #quantumscience. Visitors can try out some of the experiments for themselves and find out what - and how - research is being carried out at the #MPL. So come along until 4 p.m.!
From 5 p.m., there will be more exciting lectures, lab tours and the film "Tracing Light" at our institute at Staudtstraße 2.

💡 Die Lichtinstallation im Eingangsbereich der BND-Zentrale verbindet Design, Funktion, schafft Atmosphäre und inspiriert zu neuen Perspektiven.
💡 Die Installation aus filigran wirkenden, weißen Leuchtstoffröhren suggeriert Bewegung und spielt damit auf den Nachrichtenfluss des BND an.
💡 Bei der Lichtinstallation handelt es sich um "Kunst am Bau".

Happy #InternationalDayOfLight! The myriad ways that humans harness light is vital for powering our modern society. As an astrophysicist, I already had an appreciation for the deep understanding of light and how to measure it that underpins the entirety of the subject. My recent research on #artificiallight and its #ecological impacts have given me a further respect for lights role mediating our ecosystems.
