Just trying to book on the Interislander. For the first time ever, the web form is asking for my home address, and won't let me carry on without giving it.
Why on god's green earth does a ferry company need to know where I live? Surely it's against the Privacy Act to demand personal data you don't need to provide a service?!

“it’s fair to say that the three partners in the coalition, there were some who started with divergent views, there were some who didn’t think an investment in ferries was necessary at all."

A few more thoughts on the present, and potential future, of the interisland ferry services.
Leasing diesel-only ferries would make far more sense than buying them. Because of the inevitable price rises and shortages of diesel in the long run.
Is there an option to rent hybrid-electric ferries instead of buying them? Or rent-to-own them instead of buying them outright (ideally ones that can use sodium-ion batteries)?

The mess that our railways are in - including the Interislander - is a direct result of decades of underinvestment in maintaining and upgrading infrastructure. Both under corporate ownership as Transrail, and under the Key government after they were bought back into public ownership at the tail end of the Clark government.
The grounding of the Aratere was a direct result of this.

Something I keep coming back to: How will anything ever get better if we keep electing governments who refuse to improve anything?

Having waited 4 weeks already to cross Cook Strait, #Interislander ferries sent us a text apologising for a delayed departure from #Wellington. Better late than never, but wondering if it would be prudent to reduce the chance of #travel today from High to Moderate in view of ongoing disruption?

The ongoing #Interislander reliability issues that came so close to tragedy last weekend point to management deferring as much maintenance as possible before the introduction of their new fleet from 2025(ish). Over the next 2 years, will they continue to put the lives of the traveling public at risk? My bet is "probably" because all too often, pay is tied to financial performance and not safety. #ferry #safety #kaitaki

Just about to get on a Bluebridge ferry at Picton. Wish me luck. And a strong stomach for what looks like a rough crossing #CookStraight #InterIslander

Approximate location of the #InterIslander ferry #Kaitaki, without power, at anchor, and having issued a #Mayday. Awaiting assistance and likely struggling in heavy seas and a strong #Southerly blowing through the #CookStrait.
