  1. #ScotRail sadly failing yet again to provide a proper quality #InterCity service. What really should be a 4 or 5 coach #InterCity125 ends up compressed into a 3 coach regional #Turbostar instead. The sooner they replace the now clapped out and unreliable 40+ year old #HST with more reliable modern proper InterCity trains (and #ScotGov electrifies the routes), the better!

  2. A picture taken while spending a month travelling on European rails with an #InterRail pass, in August 1985: two #BritishRail #InterCity125 #HST trainsets are seen here at #Plymouth 🇬🇧 station.

  3. Early morning sees quite a number of #InterCity services coming and going to and from #Sydney 🇦🇺 Central. These services are usually worked by very nice trainsets that look familiar to the British traveller: their design is very close to the #InterCity125 #HST.

  4. I travelled on a ScotRail 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #Intercity125 #HST earlier today. These highspeed trainsets served destinations in Scotland years back already: this timetable leaflet is from 1978. I picked it up at a train station back then, when holidaying in the UK 🇬🇧 for the first time as a teenager.

  5. Next leg today: #Aberdeen to #Edinburgh. A former #BritishRail #InterCity125 #HST branded as #ScotRail 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #Inter7City is working this service. No @diningcar here on the train but there is a buffet counter … which is closed. A trolley service provides some catering instead

  6. Just bought my train tickets for the Brighton Ruby conference - thought I’d go a bit off-piste. Sheffield to Birmingham on a Cross Country HST (catch them before they are gone!) - followed by a loco hauled (well pushed) leg from Birmingham Moor Street to Marylebone - then Thameslink to Brighton from St P. Will be returning in a more orthodox fashion on Friday evening to ensure I get home!

  7. The first route to receive #Intercity125 (aka #HST) trains was the #GreatWestern Mainline (GWR).

Constructed by #IsambardKindomBrunel and completed in 1841, the line's alignment and gradients (Between Paddington and Didcot 1 in 1320 - 0.075 %) are well suited to high speeds trains.

Whilst largely superceded now, HST's were quite comfortable for passengers but they could produce significant fumes and noise (similar to a jet engine) especially when powering up.
