And here is an excellent talk by H. Mark Schwartz about the connection between intellectual monopolies and rise of far right populism. With intellectual monopolies the physical production is split off into separate companies. These companies managing production in turn subcontract their labor. The end result is that the intellectual monopolies can control the whole chain and capture the profits, but they do not share the gains with the wider economy. This reduces the economic fortunes of most people. For the people who expected to do better, this is infuriating.

I'm starting to go down the rabbit hole on intellectual monopoly :). Here's an interesting talk by Cecilia Rikap on how the powerful companies now are intellectual monopolies. They have high intellectual capacity so they can integrate, use, and make money off of knowledge generated by others. This helps them have high profits at the expense of the rest of the market, and to maintain this position.

I just finished reading Against Intellectual Monopoly by Michele Boldrin and David K. Levine http://dklevine.com/general/intellectual/againstfinal.htm. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Before reading the book, I knew I liked free and open source and free culture and that I didn't like patents, but I didn't know the extent of the harms patents and copyright are causing. The book gives an excellent historical overview and really breaks down the problem.
