[V347 Aur, a #lighthouse in the galaxy] Some stars, like V347 Aurigae, vary greatly in #brightness over short time scales. But why? How? The answer with #SPIRou, the infrared spectropolarimeter installed on the #CFHT : https://www.irap.omp.eu/en/2024/10/spirou-decodes-the-bursts-of-a-protostar/
Around the #protostar V347 Aurigae orbits a brown dwarf of 30 Jupiter masses. Its elliptical trajectory invites the two bodies to periodically move towards and away from each other, generating #instabilities in the #disc of matter that envelops and feeds the nascent binary system. The fall of #matter onto the protostar results in a temporary increase in its luminosity by a factor of 100. Periodic light bursts captured by the SPIRou instrument.
