Ich hab mir gerade ein Brötchen gekauft.
Ich weiß, das ist lieb gemeint. Aber es tut trotzdem weh. Weil es heißt: Ein Leben wie meins muss so furchtbar sein, dass schon der Alltag eine Heldentat ist.
Ich will keine Inspiration sein. Ich will ein ganz normaler Kerl sein, der manchmal nervt, manchmal lustig ist und manchmal gegen Laternen läuft.
Wenn du mich wirklich bewundern willst: Hör mir zu, wenn ich sag, was sich ändern muss.

Linking/crediting things is not only the right thing to do, but it allows us to then read what the actual disabled adult there had to say. It gives us names and we can find out there's video we could see of them if we cared to.
(This happened in 2019 and I remember it. They were both on some daytime talk shows.)

Or you could follow up to see where Carson Pickett is playing now or find out she later became the first soccer player with a limb difference on the US national team.

(And yes, there's a bit of Inspo Porn in that coverage by ABC too.)
But you don't get that when someone posts a ganked photo with no link, no credit, and no context because Inspiration Porn was the point.

When posters link (or credit if they have no valid links), they give us the ability to find context and more info.
The missing info here was:
The soccer player: Carson Pickett of the Orlando Pride (at the time).
The boy: Joseph Tidd, who was 2 years old at the time it was taken.
Photographer: Colleen Tidd, the mother of Joseph.

So there are three reasons I have a problem with the post I saw:
1- The poster routinely scrapes web content and reposts it rather than boosting credited posts here. It's just recycling, without credit, whatever seems likely to go viral.
I sometimes fall for this too...we're like mynah birds. But this is the softening (not caring about credit, downloading and reposting rather than boosting or linking) that led to mass theft via AI scraping. It's a work in progress for me, but I try to look for #attribution and context before boosting something.
2 - It's a "favorite photo" yet the photographer goes uncredited. You'd think you'd want to credit the person who made one of your favorite photos.
3 - The presence of disability there is just as a feel-good thing for abled people. Which is annoying because the reasons why abled people feel good over that & want to boost it to virality are part of systemic ableism.

There's no context. Abled people learn nothing about disability. Just #InspirationPorn to boost the poster's name recognition.

I don't like to boost stories like this (I wish the guy well and admire him, but I hate the way the story is being covered), but feel I need to provide a link for those who question it.
When I tried a web search to see if I could find a story on the initial crash, all I found were more inspiration porn headlines.

Always interesting to see what stories media runs with. Headline anthropomorphizing the truck that crashed into a man, which made him thrust his child to safety and lose his foot and part of his leg to eventual amputation.
You'd think they'd cover why a truck was driven into a family and who drove it, but no.
Instead it's another inspiration porn story about disability. Every comment talking about his "great attitude" and no one questioning why & how a truck was driven into him. No reference to whatever (if any) coverage there was on the crash.

Benthaus seems to have had some realizations since becoming disabled in 2018, but there's a pattern that should be pointed out:
Many of the "famous" disabled people in STEM were already through grad school or in industry as abled people before they became disabled.
This is because of the many barriers and systemic ableism of higher ed and STEM academia. It is much harder to start out disabled and make it through the harrowing.
If you want more disabled people in space science, make universities & training places ACCESSIBLE.
The UC Access Now Demandifesto (2020) gave many examples of systemic ableism within the University of California system, just to go with one public research university...

Ça me soule à un point ce type de portrait. Comme si ceux qui avaient des complications le faisait exprès ou en était responsable. C'est pas juste une question de mental quand le diabète n'est pas équilibré malgré les traitements et une hygiène de vie monastique.

As expected, no empathy or compassion was shown in response to my "deep" introductory post—only an expectation and a request for me to provide additional work and #EmotionalLabour for the unit coordinator (which, I had already completed).
So yes, while I appreciate that there was no #InspirationPorn, it would be nice to hear that they acknowledge it and are happy to support if needed.

Bei 37 Grad @ZDF geht's (mal wieder) darum, dass Menschen mit Menschen eine Beziehung führen, die chronisch krank bzw behindert sind.
Mal abgesehen von diesem #InspirationPorn dahinter sind die Kommentare mal wieder so unfassbar typisch.
Als wäre es bemerkens- & bewundernswert, dass Menschen damit leben können, ein 'kaputtes' Gegenüber zu haben.
90% der Behinderungen werden im Laufe des Lebens erworben. Spätestens seit 2020 sollte klar sein, dass eins 1-fix-3 chronisch krank werden kann.
