  1. Reactions from the assistance during Bill Atkinson's presentation of MacPaint are a strong reminder of the technical prowesses he did in his code to sublimate the hardware capabilities available at the time.

  2. Anyone want some old Insider Macintosh books? Probably moving soon and don’t really want to hold onto these. SF Bay Area preferred.

  3. It is interesting that the (classic) Macintosh Memory Manager, while a compacting heap, will not move relocatable blocks past non-relocatable blacks, except under certain special circumstances.

I'm curious why this is. There's a lot of detail in Inside Macintosh about trying to avoid fragmentation, but not much (at least that I've found so far) on the decisions behind these implementation details.

  4. The original Inside Macintosh books are really nice technical references for the 68K Mac Toolbox, etc. Luckily there are scanned versions available online, but sadly these lack tables of contents which makes them rough to navigate.

The pdfoutline tool can combine a PDF with a TOC to produce a new PDF, so I'm working my way through writing one up so I can have more convenient versions of these to flip through.

  5. Yesterday I learned that Inside Macintosh's sample code has a bug: It uses the passed-in dirty rect when drawing list items, when it should be using the full cell rect and clip to the rect the LDEF is given. #macOS #insideMacintosh #retroProgramming #listManager #classic #LDEF
