  1. CW: super cute fuzzy moth

    Okay @vlrny Here are a couple of these cuties- I believe they are some sort of Lappet moths, I'll see if get a better id when I get some posted on iNat. I've seen a nmumber of them over the last week or two, on walls near outdoor nightlights. They blend in well with dried leaves, wood etc- can be more obvious on walls, but where there's some dbris caught in spider webs etc, they can still be hard to spot!

  2. CW: pretty fly

    Hoverfly- there were 2 huddled on a wall yesterday: temps below 10C/50F after a few days in the 20C/68F range + threat of showers. Today dipped a few degrees further + scattered snow flurries + strong winds. Next days near/below freezing daytime with possibility of a little to a lot of snow. Surprised to see these little people out already- only flowers so far are *some* of the aspens + willows.

  3. CW: cool spotted moth on leaf

    @friesen5000
    Here's a cool moth I saw the other day- a first for me, and seems the id is a bit interesting: Haploa genus, maybe lecontei, originally expected only as far west as Manitoba, seems it has been moving West with University of Alberta having found larvae near Edmonton... I'm not sure if there is another species that is a better fit, another I saw seems even more eastern, and south...

  4. CW: flowers +fancy beetle

    #FlowersOnFriday @plants
    Another #NativePlant Geranium richardsonii White (Richardson's) Cranesbill; abundant here including self sown into many of my garden beds +vary considerably from nearly to entirely (?) white to noticeable or conspicuous red-violet veins that give the #flower a pink look at first glance. Petal shapes can also vary considerably smooth to raggedy. Bonus Ornate Checkered Beetle Trichodes ornatus

  5. #InsectFriday Police Car Moth (named for a time and place when police cars were black and white!) Gnophaela vermiculata. Not super abundant, but not uncommon here and sometimes a number seen at once. This one was late July last year on Achillea/Yarrow in the yard or #garden (there are wild, cultivated and self sown hybrids around) #insects #inverts #NaturalGardening #pollinators #WildlifeGarden #Alberta #Canada

  6. CW: cute 'longhorn' beetle on flowers

    #InsectFriday #FlowersOnFriday From June we have this Evodinus monticola one of the Flower Longhorn Beetles on both Rhodiola rosea ex Newfoundland seed and Trillium grandiflorum in the #garden.. #Beetles are one of the first (long before bees existed) and still important #pollinators.

  7. CW: cool looking fly on plant

    Hmm I could make this #InsectThursday or #InsectFriday or how about #FlyDay
    Anyway, this cool customer was in the garden last #June so I guess #ThrowbackThursday works too 😉
    Funny:posted it on iNaturalist, their system recognised right away that it was a photo of a Lonicera/Honeysuckle - the plant the fly is sitting on- from the close-cropped photo! Impressive, except it didn't notice the fly at all..

  8. Snow break! Random photo from #September - still Thurs here, so works for #ThrowbackThursday also #FlowersOnFriday #InsectFriday and #FlyDay for tomorrow! This is Papaver alpinum / Alpine Poppy in the #RockGarden with a cool #Fly #garden #Alberta

  9. #FlowersOnFriday Given the forecast for next week, this *could* be the last time for this year I'll be posting things still flowering outdoors!
    Plenty of unposted #flower pics to get through winter, besides the season's own beauty!

  10. CW: Bumblebees + Flower Flies on Flowers, Not too Close

    @plants @nature #FlowersOnFriday #InsectFriday #FlyDay
    This week saw days of 10-25C, nights 0 to 10C, some rainy days. The coming week is forecast for low 20sC, nights 2-7C- sounds like typical fall weather! Sunny days should be good for farmers with crops to harvest.
    This week is #autumn #blues (okay, you know I grew up calling these purple, now I might say lavender or violet!) but we're still in the #pink too!

  11. CW: bees on flowers, no close-ups

    #FlowersOnFriday #InsectFriday
    @plants @gardening @nature
    A continued typical seasonal roller coaster here- some days in mid to high 20sC (that's hottish for us), some days in the mid teens, cool nights, and a mix of sun, clouds, rain and smoke! (new normal).
    Still lots of #pollinators when it's warm, though starting to see some sad sluggish #bees, and the numbers of various sorts shift (more in replies). #Flowers #florespondence #BloomScrolling #insects #Alberta

  12. CW: bee on flower

    sorry- edited to include CW @plants @nature This one's an #InsectFriday + #FlowersOnFriday #combo!
    #bee on Carlina acaulis in the #garden
    This is a #composite #flower so those 'petals' aren't, nor are they ray flowers as in many composites (sunflowers, asters, daisies etc)- those white strappy parts are papery bracts, just there to draw #pollinator attention.The actual flowers are all those tiny things in the centre- --cont-

  13. CW: insect: cool golden fuzzy fly

    @nature A stunner for #FlyDay #InsectFriday My feeling was that it reminded me of #tachinid flies, though not the type I usually see
    #ArthroBeauty #Flies #nature #insects #Alberta #BorealForest

  14. CW: bees, flower fly, flower wasp on flowers

    #FlowersOnFriday #InsectFriday combo deal! We started the week warm, Monday around 28C humidity around 60 -90% over the daylight hours, then a bit cooler, yesterday didn't make 15, with rain off and on, today forecast for 13 with some rain.
    #Pollinators will be sleeping today, mostly, and #flowers looking soggy, but I did capture some earlier in the week!

  15. CW: bees, moth, butterfly on flowers

    @plants @nature #Pollinators for #FlowersOnFriday: The Veronica patch has started flowering, it's an old bed, several metres across, with tons of Veronica and a few other things like Achillea and Lychnis. It's a major spot for a variety of #bees flower flies #butterflies #moths etc. Here a couple sorts of #Wildbees +a Police Car Moth Gnophaela vermiculata which I have seen more of this year than ever #florespondence #Bloomscrolling #InsectFriday #Alberta
