  1. »Die EU wird entweder endlich mit dem Aufbruch beginnen – oder zu einer technisch rückständigen Provinz werden, die stolz an Museumstechnologie festhält, weil sie Innovation und Wandel als Zumutung empfindet.«

  2. CW: Long thread/13

Arrow asks us to look at the innovation question from the point of view of the company as a whole. #ClaytonChristensen's #InnovatorsDilemma looks at the motivations of individual decision-makers in large, successful companies. These individuals don't want to disrupt their own business, because that will render some part of their own company obsolete (perhaps their own division!).

  3. CW: Long thread/28

This #CurseOfBigness is why major shifts in big companies are often attended by the return of the founder - think of Gates going back to Microsoft or Brin returning to Google to oversee their AI projects. They are the only execs that other execs *can't* knife in the back.

This is the real #InnovatorsDilemma. The internal politics of large companies make Machiavelli look like an optimist.

Markets demand, yes, but it is also cultural. Companies that manage for continuous improvement and incremental improvements do not make the breakthroughs that demand a long term perspective. The initial Alexa was breakthrough but (I suspect) then Amazon imposed a continuous improvement model.

Innovation is hard, scary, & elusive. Incrementalism is easy, safe, & approachable. For most people, the choice is easy. To compound this, see the #InnovatorsDilemma .

In this episode, I play a song by JD Pinkus; this WordPress site is kind of a Mastodon instance; is using Mastodon restarting bad habits?; Apple announced AI audiobooks and Mastodon got fussy; I don’t like acccents in audiobooks; back in the day there were stores of audiobooks on cassettes; the innovator’s dilemma is working on industries and people when jobs change; the MMT job guarantee could reduce anxiety about industry disruption; I had the wrong feed for Rudy Rucker’s podcast; I am now all in on Zigbee; Sonoff Zigbee stuff is cheap and pretty good; Wiz light bulbs get confused by mesh wifi; having lots of Zigbee devices is better than one or two; I did not get my wish list of to-do items done over a very long holiday break; make the hard decisions on what to do with your items before you die so others don’t have to.

  6. Think outside the box, they say. But when you actually deliver something outside the box, they go: "But how would that fit inside the current pathway / the status quo / the normal routine?"

I skimmed the last half of the S-Curve book. All the advice seemed sound, but none of it seems easy given "crust of convention" that grows up in organizations. It's like asking an 80-year-old to act like a teenager. Some can do it, but it's the exception, not the rule. And and 80-year-old acting like a teenager is still going to struggle to compete with actual teenagers.
