Here's a cool little thing that I read in "MTG – The Art of Innistrad" (paraphrasing):

The unique property of the "monsters" of Innistrad is that they're virtually all based on humans. Lycanthropes, Vampires, Zombies, Ghosts, Witches and Skaberen are all creatures that have been human at some point. There is something particularly intimate and disquieting about that. Seeing how little it takes to leave the path of humanity behind.
