Irv Gotti, the music producer and founder of Murder Inc. Records, has died at age 54. @THR says that the cause of death has not been announced, but Gotti is known to have suffered a number of strokes in recent years, as well as diabetes-related issues. Here's their tribute to the man that signed DMX, Jay-Z and Ja Rule, worked with Ashanti and Jennifer Lopez, and created BET's "Tales," a show that blends hip-hop and storytelling. Def Jam Recordings posted about him on social media, saying: "His creative genius and unwavering dedication to the culture birthed countless hits, defining an era of music that continues to resonate with fans worldwide."

Bill Cobbs, a veteran actor whose career spanned five decades, has died at age 90. He started on the stage and went on to have roles in TV and film, with his best-known performances being in "The Bodyguard," "Demolition Man" "That Thing You Do" and the "Night at the Museum" series. Los Angeles Lakers player and executive Jerry West died today at age 86. He was an Olympic gold winner and became a key figure in the NBA in many ways, not least as the inspiration for its logo. Designer Alan Siegel said he based the logo on a photo of West's perfect dribbling form. "It's the easiest job I ever had," Siegel told CNN Sports, which has the full story plus a tribute to West.

Dickey Betts, cofounder of the Allman Brothers Band, died last week. In this essay for Paste, Matt Mitchell remembers his work on "Eat a Peach" and "Brothers and Sisters." "I contend that, between February 1972 and August 1973, there was no greater rocker walking among us than Dickey Betts," Mitchell writes. "Most musicians would kill to write 'Blue Sky,' 'Jessica' and 'Ramblin’ Man' over the course of a long career; Betts did it in just 16 months’ time, a creative peak few musicians of his caliber, genre and longevity have ever paralleled."
