Времена, когда спутниковый телефон был кирпичом с выдвижной антенной, остались в далеком прошлом. Двадцать-тридцать лет назад для связи с космосом могла потребоваться даже не трубка, а полноценный чемодан. А сегодня ваш обычный смартфон подходит к тому, чтобы решать пустить ли вызов через базовую станцию или через ближайший спутник. Мы прошли путь от аналоговых чемоданов весом в несколько кило до лазерных мостов в космосе и технологии Direct‑to‑Cell. В этом материале я хочу рассказать как зарождалась спутниковая связь, какой путь она прошла и что мы имеем на текущий момент. Мы узнаем почему иридий стал символом грандиозного коммерческого фиаско, чем высокоэлиптическая орбита отличается от геостационарной, что изменилось в космосе с приходом DVB-S2 и чем позвонить с Эвереста. А с теми, кто как и я, рос в 90-е, мы вспомним и объясним самую противную фразу нашего детства: “Это канал звукового сопровождения, программы “Орбита-4 Восток", центрального телевидения, пиии!”. Все же помнят, что она значила для нас? Что утренних мультиков не будет…

People are still asking me about making and selling the 7 turn helix. I'm undecided.
This one is off Alibaba. Full details on my site (and here) once I get some #SDR, #VNA #Inmarsat time with it. Main difference is the 3D is 0.5 spacing, this is 1.0. I'm worried about hi gain.

Changed the C-Band feed around just now and got a significant jump in signal strength. I'd say over 6db.
I have a different scalar ring/choke on order. Be interesting to compare it with this ugly setup when it arrives in a few weeks.

Getting some early data that 4F1 (APAC) #inmarsat is suffering (another) outage.
Our C and L Band ACARS is Ok at the moment.
Double checking voice (aircraft calls).

I'd love to see more for sure. I have no idea how these things work, but given they are now a private company and the UK governments involvement with their proposed purchase by Viasat, I am not holding my breath till we see more info.

My website is all about satcom ACARS, so I'm more looking for information about the move to the I-6 satellite.
But yeah, 'more details' please and thanks #Inmarsat

The #Inmarsat update we have all been waiting for... the one that gives a hint as to what happen:

"Inmarsat has recovered the I-4 F1 satellite, which suffered a partial loss of power. That loss of power invoked automatic procedures on the satellite that led to the suspension of services."

Given that, I think its a very impressive recovery they have been able to pull off.
I'm sure they will be all the more pressed to move over to the new I-6 satellite and when they do, we will try and keep up!

#Inmarsat said in a news release dated 18Apr2023 that an outage on its I-4 F1 satellite started at 2114Z on 16Apr2023.
They say they immediately started the process to transfer maritime safety services to a contingency satellite. This was successful.
They next started the restoration of Classic Aero services and expected this to be done in a matter of hours.
Next they plan to transfer those services back from the contingency satellite and try to restore other services.
