Двадцать-тридцать лет назад для связи с космосом могла потребоваться даже не трубка, а полноценный чемодан. А сегодня ваш обычный смартфон подходит к тому, чтобы решать пустить ли вызов через базовую станцию или через ближайший спутник. Мы прошли путь от аналоговых чемоданов весом в несколько кило до лазерных мостов в космосе и технологии Direct‑to‑Cell. В этом материале я хочу рассказать как зарождалась спутниковая связь, какой путь она прошла и что мы имеем на текущий момент. Мы узнаем почему иридий стал символом грандиозного коммерческого фиаско, чем высокоэлиптическая орбита отличается от геостационарной, что изменилось в космосе с приходом DVB-S2 и чем позвонить с Эвереста. People are still asking me about making and selling the 7 turn helix. I'm undecided.
This one is off Alibaba. Full details on my site (and here) once I get some #SDR, #VNA #Inmarsat time with it. Main difference is the 3D is 0.5 spacing, this is 1.0. I'm worried about hi gain.

Changed the C-Band feed around just now and got a significant jump in signal strength. I'd say over 6db.
I have a different scalar ring/choke on order. Be interesting to compare it with this ugly setup when it arrives in a few weeks.

And in some cases, you've to deal with mobile networks of cruise ships that are on #Inmarsat BGAN

Many relevant seismic waveforms appear to be unavailable from the #IRIS and #Geonet repositories.
I wonder if this has to do with the #Inmarsat #satellite #outage.
If so this is a really nasty single point of failure.

I am beyond happy with the latest version of #satdump
The UDP streaming of JASON decoded messages was the spark that caused me to dive in but I have to say, the rock solid decoding has won me over.
I am able to run lower gain and smaller antennas with lower spec'ed CPU and still get more messages that any other #inmarsat #STDC decoder that I have used to date.
(Of course, I have not downgraded any of the RF signal path, but its nice to know I could!).

Quick update. Usual insane #ACARS day here. Working with a guy in Ireland on #VHF VDL2 #RTLSDR v3 message logging. Then helped a guy in Ireland about L-Band system handshakes.
Got to do a bunch building the #L-Band #Helix #antenna, but did not finish as a guy I have been helping in Maine get running on data from #Inmarsat #CBand needed some help.
Bottom line, close to a world-first here. #ADSC data from 54w.
We now truly have global coverage from all 4 satellites!

Here is a VIP flight in the air right now.
This was the backup aircraft for the #POTUS flight yesterday.
Its mostly empty today.
Note the signal source, #ADSC means its being tracked via #Inmarsat #satellite and because its east of Hawaii, that means the satellite dish in my backyard is doing the receiving/decoding of the flight data.
