With eight films in the TIFF lineup, industry leaders say a years-in-the-making initiative to advance #FirstNations creative is paying off.

"Canadian indigenous filmmakers are having a moment at the #TorontoFilmFestival this year, with eight features in the official lineup.
"That has #EvaThomas, a writer and filmmaker from #WalpoleIslandFirstNation, busily working the room during an #IndigenousScreenOffice (ISO) breakfast at TIFF‘s Lightbox headquarters. The goal is drumming up buzz for the world premiere of her feminist crime thriller #Nika&Madison on Sunday night.
"Ahead of the Toronto premiere, Thomas and her team have plastered downtown Toronto with 'Wanted' posters from a fictional #WyandotCounty Police with the faces of #NikaAndMadison, two young indigenous women played in the feature by Ellyn Jade and Star Slade and who are forced on the run after a violent encounter with a predatory cop.
"Crucially, Nika & Madison has financing from the ISO, Canada’s film financier for First Nations storytellers like Thomas. 'Money is fundamental to the process and being able to have the support of the ISO means we have a record number of indigenous features at TIFF,' Thomas tells The Hollywood Reporter.
"Besides Nika & Madison, the official Toronto fest lineup includes mostly world premieres for #ShaneBelcourt & #TanyaTalaga’s #NiNaadamaadiz: #RedPowerRising; #BrettenHannam’s Sk+te’kmujue’katik (At the Place of Ghosts); #TashaHubbard’s Meadowlarks; #ZachariasKunuk’s #Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband); #GailMaurice’s Blood Lines; #DarleneNaponse’s Aki; and #RhayneVermette’s Levers.
"Kerry Swanson, CEO of the ISO, says indigenous filmmakers were doing a lot with little financing for decades. That’s before, in recent years, the Canadian government steered dedicated funding to support First Nations creative talent.
"The federal government financing, in part, supports efforts towards #reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Canadians after historical #racism and #injustices. But Swanson and indigenous filmmakers are mindful that financing currently directed at them can always be taken away if the country’s political winds blow elsewhere.
" 'We can never stop fighting, not just to grow our funding, but to maintain the funding that we have in the face of cuts, in the face of this backlash against inclusive programs and funding initiatives. We’re very aware of that,' Swanson argues."

After I repeatedly told them everyone coming in MUST mask up because Dad had zero immunity & me & Mom are immunological compromised. My Dad was dying & that fucker chose to use ego/power of authority to abuse & traumatize my entire family. My Dad died with cops as one of his last living memories. I won't EVER forgive anyone who let that happen. My Dad had police traumas stemming back to his young adult years as a political university student activist in Saigon. He faced many brutal & violent police inflicted tortures. He still refused to stop fighting for what is right.Reference date: June 8, 2023.

Et pour ça, le système des quotas est évoqué. Mais comment mettre ça en pratique ?
On engage, pour ne prendre que l'aspect du genre, que des femmes jusqu'à atteindre le quota ? Est-ce légal ? Est-ce qu'il n'y a pas là une forme de discrimination positive ? Par exemple, est-ce qu'on ne risquerait pas d'écarter des candidats plus compétents car ils ne rentrent pas dans le quota ?
Ou alors à candidat.es équivalent.es on privilégie d'avancer vers une plus grande mixité ? Mais c'est quoi deux candidat.es équivalent.es ? Comment on départage ça si l'un.e a plus de compétences dans un domaine et l'autre dans un autre ?

“Don’t portray us as a band of beggars coming to demand reparation. […] I think the Europeans have obligations to us, like all the unfortunate, but especially to us for harms that they caused. That is what I call reparation.” These words of Aimé Césaire, renowned Martinican author of “Discourse on Colonialism”, still resonate everywhere in the world 71 years after they were published.
The issue concerns 70% of the world’s population, either as a citizen of a colonizing country or as one of the colonized, according to French #history professor Bouda Etemad, author of the book “Crimes and Reparations, the West faced with its colonial past”. The colonized and their descendants, he writes, have the right to demand #reparation from the #European powers for the harms these States committed over a period of 500 years, from the “discovery” of #America by Christopher #Colombus to independence in the second half of the 20th century. Forced labour, slavery, persecution, executions, extermination, bombardments, looting and forced cultural #assimilation: the list is long of violent #abuses that accompanied #colonization in #Africa, the Near East, #Asia, the Americas, #Oceania and northern #Europe.
This special focus concentrates on the period known as the “second #colonial empire” which from 1815 marked the new #expansionism of the Western powers until the wave of independence in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
