  1. A Pessimistic Law of Information Dissemination

    Except in very small groups,
there is no way to broadcast a single message
so that it reaches all of its desired recipients
    and gets their attention.

  2. Another riveting installment in the "Tech Brilliance" series: how to change your background. 🙄 Because clearly, conquering the art of desktop wallpaper is the path to #enlightenment in the information age. 🎨✨

  3. Troubling graph suggests more users turn to ChatGPT than Wikipedia. Is AI convenience worth risking reliable, human-curated info? The implications for truth online are huge. We're watching this. #AI #InformationAge #FutureOfFacts

  4. I've wanted to write this blog post for such a long time.

It's about something that affects all of us: being sold the concept of "free."

But what is "free"? If it's free, how does it make money? And how does it generate 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 money?

Read why we're long overdue for a definition of "free." 👇

  5. Audre Lorde famously stated, 'The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house.' Basic cultural skills and fundamental education provide the means to develop one's own tools, articulate ideas, and challenge the master—ultimately dismantling the master's house using both personal and borrowed tools. A lack of tools and knowledge renders one dependent, akin to servitude—an especially critical issue in the #informationage.

  6. The quote stuck out to me because in our current news landscape, algorithms and social media determine much of the media we see and we can't trust "local" news to bring us what we really need to see.

It's good to have multiple sources of news stories and not just rely on a Facebook feed because that will push what it wants you to see. I haven't watched local news in decades, but I'm thinking back to when Sinclair was caught pushing the same stories/dialog across the country - NPR link below.

I think we're past the Information Age and are now making it through a Disinformation Age. Calling something an alternate truth is just another way of lying/deception, for example.

  7. Can't believe today is it, #election2024. Felt like next level #CambridgeAnalytica in many ways, and more of it happened in front of our eyes, such as #Elon buying #Twitter and swing state votes.

Truth is seemingly sinking deeper in our ocean of information, in the name of Freedom of Speech?

But who knows what's good or bad?

  8. I feel that to understand #Trump, one could read the 48 laws of power by Robert Greene, and then watch some of his rallies.

  9. From Hieroglyphs to #Hyperlinks: Why #Knowledge #Management Is as Old as Time and Not a New Phenomenon

Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) is often portrayed and perceived as a modern phenomenon, especially in the context of the so-called #digitalage and the #informationage. However, the roots of PKM are ancient, extending back to the earliest forms of human communication and record-keeping.

An information society is a society or subculture where the usage, creation, distribution, manipulation and integration of information is a significant activity. 12. Finished Greg Jackson’s The Dimensions of a Cave. A very thoughtproving plot but way too much of text padding. Overdone.

  13. Wrote this a year ago:

Why an ‘everything app’ is bad news for liberal democracies and free markets.

India, and other liberal democracies, must prevent any app, foreign or home-grown, from coming to dominate our information space.

  14. The reason the Wikipedia model is better than the Twitter model is because Truth and Popularity are different things.

Truth has no obligation to be popular. And popularity doesn’t care much about truth.

  15. Now even statesmanship has become performative.

The form is exaggerated for global public consumption but the substance is limited to local political considerations.

Statesmanship requires lifting oneself above immediate politics and try to resolve system-level issues. Sadly, no world leader fits this job description.

Ergo, we can neither expect peace nor order in international relations at this time.

  17. Someone asked me today if I thought #AI would transform everything.

My answer was that I see AI as a continuation of the disruption created by the #InformationAge, which is obviously huge. But the question is probably the delta, and my prediction is that AI will be about 30% of the transformation generated by globally-available Internet. Which is still a lot! But less than what we've already experienced.

I usually don't record these predictions and regret it later, so -- Let the Record Show.

  18. Here Europe is trying to force fit 21st century work into a late-19th century regulatory framework. ft.com/content/1d2ca0e1-b3f0-4

Instead of retrogressive policies, we need to think about new governance frameworks that would unlock economic potential while providing workers with appropriate social benefits.

  19. I think Musk’s potential decision to charge Twitter users a fee is a good thing.

Costless mass communication lies at the heart of the crisis of the early Information Age.

Is this supposed to be a surprise?
I know there's a sizable % of the population that doesn't understand the extent of the Russian Interference in the 2016 election, but nearly all know there was some.
Cyber attacks occur daily, sometimes hourly, from state actors alone.
Even so here's further evidence of warfare in the dis-information age.

  26. “By the way, much as I love bookstores and booksellers, we sit in the second rung beneath public libraries and public librarians. They’re the true heroes of our industry, and they don’t sell a single book. They’re sitting in there doling them out for free.”
    Barnes & Noble CEO #JamesDaunt in a #Decoder interview with #NilayPatel (#TheVerge) in 2023.
