  1. #infomocracy mentioned! (Great talk from @r-emrys.bsky.social at the Rewilding the Web workshop.) Cc @older.bsky.social

  2. #Infomocracy Although I don't think it is impossible, because I don't think this is the first time for this situation.

  3. infuriates me when news reports assign an action/intent/emotion to "Russia" or "China" or "America" [sic], rather than its ruling class, not just because it promotes nationalist, often racist thinking, but because the nation-state is the wrong level of analysis for what's happening. #Infomocracy

  4. #Infomocracy #NarrativeDisorder I've been thinking of that post about the "extended universe" of that stupid ai "actress" & how they're trying to monetize the pathology of celebrity without having to involve celebrities; FB slop monetizing "water cooler moments" w/o needing them to really happen...

  5. "many Americans" is an alarm bell: if they don't say "majority" or "plurality" it could be anywhere from 50 to 150 million. #Infomocracy

  6. I mean this was right below that on my timeline so: is 60 minutes a real news show? I guess not. Where does one find a real news show/paper, in real time? #Infomocracy bsky.app/profile/mehd...

  7. 1) paywalls more importantly 2) if I see eg NYT publishing, idk, "man bites dog", yes prob true. But do I trust their extensive framing on what dog did to provoke it & what that means for dog-owners in the 5 boroughs? no I don't, which leads back to not paying to get through the paywall #infomocracy

  8. @davefischer @futurebird If you liked The Disposessed, you might like Malka @older's #Infomocracy, a thought experiment based on recent anarcho-socialist theory: What if we abolished states by letting smallish groups of people living together pick whatever government they wanted?

  9. @randrews @ireneista I'm a huge fan of the science fiction novel #Infomocracy, which is a big ol thought experiment about one possible solution to the problem of microtargeted propaganda: a neutral* arbiter of correctness that can't censor lies, but can annotate them, so every political ad has a ticker below, not unlike the ones news shows have already, that tells you when it's making stuff up

    * Of course not. The truth isn't neutral; the Information bureaucracy is merely nonpartisan. The biases intrinsic to being such a bureaucracy are the subject of the final book in the trilogy.

  11. This by @darius and @kissane is fascinating and interesting

It feels like a founding document for #infomocracy 's Information, or possibly its successor (attn @ryanrandall !)

  12. Ugh this story about Maven, not long after the threads things, feels like how it must've[0] felt when Phillip Morris and Heritage decided to join the #infomocracy

... I'm glad you're playing our game but I'm already aware you're cheating at every opportunity

    H/T @older for this useful narrative tool/hook

[0] not sure what the right modal verb is for an event that (might take/will have taken/would have taken) place on an alternate timeline

  13. @dfs_comedy

That number of subscribers is about 10x larger than a @older centenal, while we're dreaming about alternative models of collective governance of information.

  14. The idea of the fediverse as an embryonic @older- -ite #infomocracy returns

Here (PB), an instance is even more clearly a proto-centenal

  15. Look at this predating #Infomocracy by more than 50 years: "Louie explains that what we have got to do is to educate the public. 'When people complain about the traffic [...] we have got to tell the people who is to blame. Otherwise, they will be blaming the trucks.'"

  16. @futurebird

This seems like an undocumented mechanism that helps operate a centenal in @older's #infomocracy

It's in my headcanon now anyway

  17. @thenexusofprivacy

Pretty sure that ActivityPub+http+dns is playing the role of Information here.

All we need is a mandated cap on instance size and we can
    (a) start calling them "centenals" instead of instances
    (b) learn to federate policy and moderation into coalitions

then we'll be looking at the embryo of #infomocracy

    @older

  18. "#infomocracy, but make it ActivityPub-compliant!" If only I could write as well as @older ...

    @trochee ]

  19. @thenexusofprivacy @fediverse @fediversenews

This reads like a prequel to #infomocracy

With Meta playing the role of Heritage/Phillip-Morris centenal confederations

    Attention @older

  20. CW: Meta-fediverse; another shout-out to #Infomocracy

I know it's tacky to keep talking about it, but the ongoing chat about how to run moderation coalitions keeps looking like the embryo of @older's #infomocracy

    We got
    - megacorps, with big money & broken incentives (Phillip-Morris, Heritage; BlueSky, Threads)
    - neorx micro-coalitions (kkk centenals; gab)
    - lone wolf centenals/instances
    - (best) dozens of anarchic coalitions like #TheBadPlace

  21. @shoofle The novel #Infomocracy and its sequels detail a municipalist society of questionably libertarian commitments, with problems that I think are inspired by the actual problems implementing municipalism in Rojava?

    Pretty good political thrillers, too

  22. A UX #designjustice nightmare with extremely high stakes for asylum-seekers is unfolding on the border as the restrictions of Title 42 are replaced with the unforgiving code of CBP One, a smartphone app for making point of entry interview appointments that fails to include some migrants' languages, assigns appointments to individuals instead of families, and requires live photos while failing to recognize the facial features of those with darker skin.

  23. Update: The story has now moved to just below the scrollfold and with less defensive framing. Still not on Page One. (My kingdom for an automatically updating webscraper to track the literal size and fall of different stories in importance!) #infomocracy
