I recently went pretty far down this rabbit hole (dopamine driven research into dopamine :ablobspin:) wondering what the felt difference between tea and coffee was.
Caffeine is indeed a natural insecticide. Maybe caffeine messes with their nervous system as well?
What I found is that caffeine is the same substance in coffee and tea, but tea also has other methylxanthines (theobromine which is also in cacao, and theophylline) with different effects. Tea also has other chemicals which influence the caffeine uptake.
Anyway, have fun, there's much to explore there!

CW: Testing mini PCs, infodump
Ran PCMark on the mini PCs we bought during Prime Day and found the results rather surprising.
One PC is Windows-only and meant as a (very) lightweight desktop replacement. It has an Intel N97 chip and, apparently, a decent built-in graphics processor considering its low wattage. It scored 397 on Steel Nomad Light by maintaining 2.8 frames per second. It also scored 330 for a single-core CPU test.
The other PC is meant to be used as a NAS and supports dual-booting right out of the box. It has an Intel N150 chip but, seemingly, no meaningful onboard graphics support. It scored almost 20% worse on both tests, with 317 on Steel Nomad and 288 on the single-core CPU test.
Why would the device intended as a NAS have a less powerful CPU? While the reduced graphics performance is an understandable tradeoff, losing 20% of raw CPU performance seems like a lot. I suppose it's because the device is meant to be efficient when it's left on 24/7; the N150 chip has a TDP of just 6 watts but the N97 chip could use twice as much. So skimping a bit on CPU power to reduce energy consumption makes sense.
The thing that surprised me, though, was looking at the power requirements of an M.2 NVME. Reading and writing both consume 4-5 watts, meaning that using the drive requires nearly as much electricity as running the CPU at full power. If you're running four NVME drives in a (software) RAID setup, the energy consumed by the drives would easily exceed that of the CPU.
Not sure if I have a point to all this rambling, other than maybe wishing I'd gotten another one of those Windows-based PCs (and possibly installed Linux), since it'd be slightly better as a replacement for my old gaming desktop that Windows 11 won't support and that my gaming laptop surpasses in every way. It'd be more performant as a daily driver for when I don't need a 220 watt gaming laptop just to chat with people and write smut.

Yeah, that's stupid, and actually not only stupid from the get go but helps to stupidify people even more.I guess it's the #infoDump aspect. that overwhelms people who try to do things they actually don't want to do but feel forced to do.
... aaaaand that's the "mindset" I'm talking about.
They didn't want to leave where they were, and they want back what they had.
First is their problem, second is becoming ours.

@cafkafk @arichtman aalso different oils have different properties - smoke point is the important and purity - there are some "secret oils" that chefs rave on for diff uses e.g. between searing, saute etc. Sous vide would be optimal "even cooking" first but it's involved and then searing to get the browning / crusty bits :P I'm a cooking nerd :P #infodump

In the category of "things that fascinate me but probably no one else"
The lenses of my swimming goggles are angled in such a way that everything I see is doubled up, but only when I'm underwater. The image I'm getting from each eye isn't overlapping completely.
After wearing them for about half an hour, my brain started correcting for this. Now everything was registered correctly and no longer doubled up.
But now there was a new phenomenon. Everything in my peripheral vision (360 degrees around, top and bottom as well as side vision ) looked closer than it actually is.
This created the illusion that the flat ocean floor dipped sharply into a deep hollow wherever I looked directly at it.
Kind of trippy.
But a few days of this, and that optical illusion is gone too, or at least, so much reduced that it's hardly noticeable, and the ocean floor looks flat again.
So my brain adjusted for that too.

Starting to build up my little object/metadata store in Go and stumbled over io.fs which provides a nice interface to filesystems, which would simplify testing and allow me to avoid assembling paths by concatenating strings (and hopefully works with openat() and friends under the hood, but I haven't checked).
Unfortunately it lacks any way to rename() for atomic install/replacement of files, which is going to be problematic.
