  2. Oh no! 😱 California's going after the sacred infinite scroll, as if anyone actually reads that far down. 💤 But don't worry, JavaScript-disabled warriors, the world will keep spinning with or without your scroll-induced thumb cramps. 😂

  3. The #EuropeanCommission has accused #Meta of breaching the #DigitalServicesAct by failing to address the mental health risks of “#addictivedesign” features like #autoplay and #infinitescroll on #Facebook and #Instagram. The investigation also considers the impact of these features on children’s sleep and the potential for algorithms to promote harmful content. If the charges are upheld, Meta could face fines up to 6% of its annual turnover. theguardian.com/technology/202 #tech #media #news

  4. RE: curia.social-network.europa.eu

Well. A lot of digital rights lawyers seem very excited about this ruling from the Court of Justice today - in particular, the final paragraph 122:

⚡️a website that controls what viewers see via an algorithm is liable for the content⚡️

It's how the Internet works -- it's not instantaneous, constantly

If you're offline for five hours and you start up your "app" which "page" does your app pull down from across the entire Fediverse first?

    The oldest pages you're missing?

Or the very newest pages you're missing?

150 of the oldest pages, or 25 of the newest pages?

And then "show" them to you, starting where?

  8. TechSpot: Europe is coming after infinite scroll – TikTok’s endless feed is now a legal problem. “The European Commission has formally accused TikTok of designing its product to be addictive – particularly for minors – and indicated that features such as infinite scroll may need to change. This marks the first time EU regulators have treated addictive design as a systemic risk under the […]

The author bravely whines about the digital cesspool of algorithm-pandering posts, yet they contribute with their own mind-numbing grumble 🍿. > While Mastodon and other Fediverse applications also use the infinite scroll, the incentives are different for instance owners and users

True. For example some fediverse apps have experimented with wellness settings that allow turning off infinite scroll. I'm thinking particularly of @nolan's Pinafore web app and its successors (I think @enafore is currently the most active fork?).

I'd love to see this in all social web apps.

  11. 42 years ago Carol Shaw's River Raid was released for the Atari 2600. Shaw had programmed one of the earliest procedurally generated vertical scrolling video games. Her "River of No Return" was effectively infinite.

After countless gamers had cleared the river of obstacles, I reimagine the river today now occupied by wildlife

  13. Recently, there's been an increase in people talking about not seeing Facebook posts from friends, or folks noticing their own posts have been memory-holed by Zuckerberg's algorithmic shenanigans. I can verify some friends have made posts recently by looking at their profile page.

Now, there's nothing left for Facebook to show in my feed — after Facebook randomly and inscrutably hides a bunch of friends' posts, I unsubscribe from most FB groups and remove most interests from my profile so it doesn't know what to spam me about, and my web-browser plugins filter the remaining ads.

In 2006, we thought Infinite Scroll changed websites forever, but now enshittification has made them finite again.

    Facebook is dying.
