  1. If you like your adits and industrial archaeology, here's a free, very visual write-up for you about the mile-long Penrhyn quarry drainage adit, built 1847-1849, possibly involving some Latter Day Saint drivers, though we failed to find definitive evidence so far.

  5. The Northernmost Kilns: Commondale’s Forgotten Industry

A view up the narrow valley of Commondale, taken from the weathered lime kilns that still cling to the slopes above Coble Hall. Crumbling and defiant, I reckon they must be the most northerly kilns in the North York Moors, silent witnesses to a brief and curious chapter of i ...

  6. Clearing the Past: The Lost Drumhouse of Newton Wood

A morning with the National Trust, cutting back the summer growth from around the brick and stone remains known as the Kip, at the Cliff Rigg end of Newton Wood.

The Kip is the remains of the head of a narrow-gauge tramway incline. Ore ...

  7. Fire, Fumes, and Fatality: Scugdale’s Calcining Kiln

In the early 19th century, Scugdale was an unremarkable little dale where people busied themselves with weaving and bleaching fine linens. The local economy depended on at least four water mills, all fed by the ever-reliable Scugdale Beck. That is, until 1857, when pr ...

  8. Flanders & Swann and the "Hammer Ponds of Sussex"

Some will know exactly where is post is going and probably I have started an 'earworm' for you! If not, read on about some 20th-century culture and a little about the Tudor and Stuart Iron industry in the Sussex Weald.

  9. Newton Wood’s Hidden Industrial Heritage

This morning's low cloud cover meant there was no chance of capturing any stunning shots of the Cleveland Hills, so I turned my attention to something closer to the ground.

Folk often ask me about this brick and concrete structure at the Cliff Rigg end of Newton Wood, recently cleared of bracken and brambles by the Nati ...

  10. The White Flint Legacy of Castleton

At the crest of an old tramway incline from the former silica quarries, once the workings of the Sheffield-based firm J. Grayson Lowood & Co. Ltd., one gazes across the Esk valley. Just off-centre in the distance lies the looming hump of Castleton Rigg, climbing to the highest point of the “Fat Moors.” The village of Castleton itself clings to the f ...

  13. Roseberry Mine Tramway

What a difference when the sun comes out.

An otherwise dull walk around a regular route of mine taking in Capt. Cook's Monument and Roseberry, although I avoided the summits as it's the weekend.

And crossing the field at the top of Thief Lane, brilliant sunshine. To my right, Roseberry was still in dar ...

  14. My script for #AncientWoodland (emphasis on Welsh cases) based on local surveys 2014 to 2019. One of my conclusions was that landscape often classed as Welsh Ancient Woodland was often post-industrial woodland or land severely damaged by coal mining even though the coal mining or iron activities may have ended in the seventeenth century or earlier enabling the current recovered woodland to present as Ancient. #HistoricalGeography #IndustrialArchaeology #LandscapeHistory #PostIndustrialWoodland

  15. I have a theory:

My theory is that if I write #limeKiln #archaeology #history #19thcentury and hint that I might wanna see people's stuff, good things might happen.

  16. Pulling a favourite photo from my files by way of introduction. Here is an in-progress shot of our public excavations at the Albion Mines Foundry (1827) in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. The casting sand floor with its scorching patterns has been my all-time favourite thing to excavate. #archaeology #foundry #industrialarchaeology #publicarchaeology

  17. Marske Sands, do we want a healthy marine ecology or a free Enterprise Zone?

"In many respects the most notable feature of any integrated iron and steel works, whether operational or non-operational, a blast furnace is an impressive example of industrial architecture at its best. Located at the northern end of the development, at the boundary between t ...
