  1. "The measures Trump has enacted will not create the strong, well-resourced public systems required to drive innovation that produces broad prosperity. Industrial policy instruments can be powerful, but only when they are embedded in capable institutions and used to solve problems rather than merely reward those with privileged access.

If industrial policy is to deliver for the American people, the Trump administration must demand discipline from CHIPS Act recipients. If the president aims to secure a good deal for taxpayers, then the current approach—in which the state is taking passive equity stakes with no voting rights, no conditions, and no reinvestment requirements—will not suffice.

Trump speaks to the grievances of the working class. Industrial policy can deliver for those voters, but only if contracts require that public investment translates into better wages and more affordable essentials, not just higher stock prices. Placing conditions on government support is not adding bureaucratic red tape. It is the mechanism by which public value is created.

An effective industrial strategy must create wealth through public investment guided by modern-day moonshots, missions that set clear public goals defined by the problem to be solved and the outcomes to be delivered."

  2. Surprise, surprise.
This is not an industrial strategy.
Whatever it is, it isn't fit for the coming era of energy descent and ecosystem collapse.

  3. Writing in the FT, Keir Starmer pitches (ahead of today's announcement) Labour's new ten year industrial strategy.... and what word is conspicuously absent? Europe...

He mentions the advantages of three new trade deals the Govt. has concluded, but not the minuscule benefits compared to the loss of easy access to the EU's single market.

A really strong industrial strategy would start with re-establishing friction-free access to the massive market next door!

  4. Today's announcement of Labour's ten year industrial strategy will include money to lower energy costs for (some) energy intensive industries, leaving many sectors (especially retail & hospitality) still paying higher prices than across Europe.

But, little help has yet been offered to consumers whose problems with high energy prices are as pressing as industry's.

So, first conclusion might be the UK's new industrial policy is focussed on supporting energy firms?

  5. Ah, a riveting tale of how to build a nuclear navy, because who doesn't want to take career advice from a retired admiral? 😂 Apparently, the way to "revolutionize" is through endless jargon about industrial strategy and AI hardware startups. 🚀📈 Bravo, #ChinaTalk, for presenting groundbreaking insights that are as fresh as a 1950s sitcom! 🕰️
