  1. Just had my monthly in person meeting with the food group.

    I'm just happy.

We had a new person join us. They're new in town and want to grow roots. We're plugging them in.

    Lots of things going on:
    - Quarterly group potluck is this Saturday (as one of our members pointed out, this is a community group and we need to meet and hang out!!! She is now coordinating the potlucks moving forward and has ordered us to bring food. So we will.)
    - Fridges are stressed under summer heat but have been holding up which is amazing
    - We're using simple thermometers and checking daily right now but are researching wifi thermometers to send us autoupdates
    - One fridge needs more cleaning supplies
    - Second fridge needs a latch installed to start keeping supplies there. Lock has already been procured.
    - We're in final stages of getting 501c3 status under another group in town who offered it to us!!!
    - That will let us reapproach some stores for food rescue who needed us to have 501c3 status
    - Foodrescue from the latest gluten free bakery is going strong
    - LOOOOTS of indoor food growing classes are set up. Our master gardener has just run with that initiative, so we are giving monthly classes at local libraries on how to grow your own food indoors (the librarians love us apparently)

And! This is tangential, but the library is looking to expand its seed library! The main one at the head branch has been doing so well, they're looking to add seed libraries at other branches!!!!

    How amazing is that?!?!

  3. Regarding indoor hydroponics...

Most of my power consumption is through my grow lights (still way cheaper to grow than to buy at the grocery store).

I've thought about solar panels and batteries etc... but that costs a lot of money (I havent found a non-scam solution - still researching, but let me put this down for a second).

So I started thinking... instead of lining my roof or side walls with solar panels to power indoor LED grow lights...

...why not just install light collectors outside and funnel that light directly into my house and on too of my plants with fiber optics?!?!

Basically run cabling through my house to wall literal light sockets. And attach further cabling from there to my plant shelves and setups. I could still have LEDs for augmenting the grow space if needed or during stormy days for example... but even then there is light to be collected. Anyhow!)

Turns out other people have the same idea!

Here is a gentleman going a into detail on the math and science of it with a DIY project: m.youtube.com/watch?v=DN8GXTmR

There are even some companies that do this!

Here's the basic idea (I stole this pic from solarreviews.com/blog/guide-to):

  5. @yohan_q - Absolutely! Low cost, low maintenance, hands off passive / automated hydroponics:

Read here for a proof of concept bin build: infosec.exchange/@tinker/11216

And here for a larger "kitchen garden" build: infosec.exchange/@tinker/11143

Basically using the Kratky method. See here: kratky.weebly.com/

So you provide as much water as the plants need (for leafy greens) or set up a passive system with a reservoir and float valves (for larger more water intensive plants. See here: kratky.weebly.com/bigger-plant

No pumps, no aerators. Lights are on a timer. Mix nutrients and water. Plant the seed and ignore until its time to harvest.

  8. Dlouho jsem tu neaktualizoval své pěstování pod lampou. Tak aspoň takhle pomocí fotek. Snad k tomu někdy sepíšu i něco ucelenějšího. #ZahradaPodLampou #IndoorFarming #indoorgarden

  9. Tak saláty pomalu vypadají na rozsazení. Teď to jen dobře načasovat. Testovací okurky a dýně utlačují testovací rajčata. Občas se nějaká ta chybka stane. Příště zvlášť. Přemýšlím jestli nezačít přihnojovat špenát. #IndoorFarming #ZahradaPodLampou

Budu to muset začít měřit.

  11. Včera přišlo světlo z Číny. Objednával jsem 12.1. a přišlo přesně za 10 dní. Další zajímavostí je, že deklarovaných 65 W odpovídá. Respektive světlo má v jednom režimu 60W a v druhém 69W (příkon). #IndoorFarming #ZahradaPodLampou

  13. Už se peče! Příprava substrátu v plném proudu. Na 100°C cca 1,5 hodiny.
    #IndoorFarming #ZahradaPodLampou

  14. Včera jsme sestavili nový stan a zavěsili světlo.

  15. Trouble with my hydroponics!!! Oh noooo!!!!

So, two of my crops failed to germinate in the bins (I'm seeding directly from the bins and not germinating separately / planting into bins after they've sprouted).

This was weird. - Four of the other crops germinated just fine.

    So what's going on?

Got to thinking. I put water in from a different tap. Same water... right. So it's not a pH issue, etc. But the water was COLD from this other tap. Like really chilly. Whereas the four bins were filled up with warm water.

So I'm thinking, maybe the temp was too cold for the seeds to germinate.

I've started over, this time with warm water. Will watch if that helps. We'll see!

  18. Harvesting some ingredients for a bug spray and, man, there is just something about tobacco. I love this plant. Also, look at these fucking leaves #plants #tobacco #indoorFarming #gardening
  19. The tobacco plants are really popping off lately which is cool because I'm going to turn them into pesticide to stop the flea beetles from killing my gottdamm bok choy #plants #gardening #indoorFarming #tobacco #bokChoy
  20. Buttery gem lettuce, seeds from Baker Creek Seeds (https://rare seeds.com)
Always love growing this cultivar. Delicious and easy to grow. #plants #gardening #indoorFarming
