The Other is for the subject always ‘anxiogen’, since it constantly forces the subject to ask ‘Who am I?’, and especially, ‘Who am I for the Other?’ However, as this book has shown, in post-industrial societies, the subject is also perceived as a self-inventor and as someone who is actually freer from the constraints of other people than our predecessors. So if, on the one hand the subject is still concerned about the question about the desire of the Other (i.e. how others regard them and how they are regarded in society as a whole), on the other hand, the subject is under pressure to make a choice about his or her life independently of social constraints.

Atomised society has stitched itself back together and it’s pretty awful really

There was this period we talked about a lot of a very rapid atomisation from the late 60s through to the 90s and early 00s. My sense is that the internet has reversed some of that, people have stitched themselves back together in new kinds of ways. That has happened in a context where there hasn’t been much political organising on the ground, but there has been a lot of political ideas and people have attached themselves to them.

There was this period we talked about a lot of a very rapid atomisation from the late 60s through to the 90s and early 00s. My sense is that the internet has reversed some of that, people have stitched themselves back together in new kinds of ways. Die Menschheit tritt in den Höhepunkt der #Individualisation ein, die ihre größtmögliche Fragmentierung bedeutet. #Selbstbestimmung meint hier gegen alle #Vernunft, der Natur und den Intellekt seinen gefühlsbedingten Willen durchzusetzen. Es ist zugleich Höhepunkt der Illusion des Getrenntsein mit allem anderen, denn es gilt den eigenen Lebensplan, die eigene "Bestimmung" durchzusetzen oder zu scheitern, weil die Welt dafür (noch) nicht "stimmig" ist. Deshalb greift auch selbstbestimmte #Einsamkeit um sich.

Die gleichzeitig auftretende Bewegung einer moralisierenden, pluralistischen Gesellschaft ist nur der Reflex, die Sehnsucht nach dem durch Individualisation verlorenen Paradies der körperlichen, seelischen und geistigen Einheit mit der Schöpfung und einem Schöpfer. Denn dieser #Moralismus, die Erzwingung von Vielfalt will nur die Grenzen der eigenen Individualisation vor dem Einfluss allgemeiner Ganzheit in der Verschiedenheit schützen.

Der Fehler hierbei ist, dass nicht das durch Selbsterkenntnis geläuterte Bewusstsein die Einheit anstrebt, sondern nur ein Gefühl der Einheit in einer bestimmten Gruppe, die den eigenen Willen nicht im Wege steht. Diese Einheit des Gefühls, darum sprunghaft, kurzzeitig, intolerant, soll durch Bevormundung, Belehrung, Erziehung und letztlich #Autoritarismus erzwungen werden, was ebenso sinnlos ist, wie erzwungene Liebe.
