I'm sharing a paper that I wrote about the story of Pia Machita, a Tohono O'odham elder who led his village in resisting military conscription from 1940-1941.
It is a powerful story and one that brings to mind other moments of Indigenous resistance to the draft, including the Oklahoma Green Corn Rebellion.
FYI- the paper was first written for a class at Tohono O'odham Community College, but I did some rewriting on it after I turned it in.

I'm working & can't go. Sharing for others who may be interested in attending.
RAVEN Trust - Respecting #AboriginalValues and #Environmental Needs #nonprofit based in #VictoriaBC.
Join RAVEN this weekend for another round of Solastalgia: Addressing #Climate Anxiety through #CommunityBuilding and #ArtMaking. This will be our second #zinemaking #workshop. We will come together to discuss our climate anxieties (and potential actions we can take to address them) through community building and art-making. This #handsOn zine-making workshop will offer an opportunity to express some of our fears, ideas, and dreams when it comes to a more just and livable future.
Two awesome facilitators leading this workshop. Aneri Garg, #RAVENTrust Development Coordinator, and Desiree Wallace, a documentary filmmaker, digital campaigner, and organizer with #StandEarth.

B.C. hereditary chief gets house arrest for #pipeline blockade
Chief invoked #Wetsuweten law for protecting land and water against #CoastalGasLink
by Betsy Trumpener · CBC News
Posted: Jul 03, 2024 9:23"Chief Dtsa'hyl testified that as a leader, he had a duty to protect Wet'suwet'en land, water, burial sites, and historic trails from the degradation of pipeline construction. He said his actions against Coastal GasLink upheld the traditional Wet'suwet'en law of trespass.
"During the sentencing hearing this week, defence lawyer Rebecca McConchie said the chief's actions needed to be understood in the context of 'the oppression of Wet'suwet'en people in colonial history and the ongoing issues with #UncededLand.'
"The defence said the criminal contempt case punished the chief 'for upholding #IndigenousLaw because doing so breached a #colonial court order.'
"The judge acknowledged that questions around the rights and title of unceded #Indigenous territory, as well as how industrial projects consult with #FirstNations, remain unresolved."

Good morning, pals and fellow proles! Another day, another climate-related lawsuit. This one is from the Jean Charles Choctaw Nation, against the state of Louisiana and HUD (USA Dept. of Housing and Urban Development).
Ever since escaping the Trail of Tears, the Jean Charles Choctaw have lived on the Isle de Jean Charles in Terrebonne Parish, LA. But rising sea levels have reduced the area of the island from 22,000 acres in 1955 to 320 acres today. Thus, in 2016, HUD granted LA $48m for the resettlement of the Nation to New Isle. This made them the first group of internal climate refugees in the USA. Their plan was to maintain the Isle de Jean Charles as a cultural and biodiversity repository while building flood-proof, solar-powered dwellings in their new home, along with a community center that would also function as a seed bank, museum, child care center, and more.
The lawsuit charges that Louisiana has mishandled these funds by
-scrapping the cultural center on Isle de Jean Charles
-offering the land on Isle de Jean Charles to Dupont Corp. which aims to build for-profit fishing cabins there
-scrapping the community center on New Isle
-scrapping the solar power construction
-shoddy construction of new dwellings, particularly the lack of adequate elevation to cope with floodingIt also aims to obtain Federal recognition for the tribe, which is only recognized officially by the state of Louisiana at the moment.
