Africa’s anarchist and anti-authoritarian traditions are presented on this track to give a radically different perspective of the continent’s political story.

The track “When Visions Fall From Sky” pays homage to African ancestral practices, emphasizing the mystical experience while challenging the grand narratives and stereotypes that have been made (and used against) African peoples throughout modern history. It utilises bass-heavy voices of dub poetry and jagged, dub-inflected percussion. Together, these elements have the piercing effect of presenting what Sankara Future Dub Resurgence describe as “Our African story” (as opposed to his story):

18th century literacy rates in West Africa in places like Senegal
were two to three times higher
than any place in Europe at the same time

Plantation records in America
were often kept by enslaved African Muslims using African languages written in Arabic script because the slave owners could not read or write

BOOM!

In 1770, before the French and American revolutions,
There was a revolution in Futa Toro, West Africa
That not only abolished slavery, but kings

Thank you very much for bringing this up. "Anarchism" is indeed very European-centered.
Notwithstanding the underlying vakues, such as the desire for freedom, mutual aid and horizontal decision-making processes is something innate in the human social mind and appears worldwide through the entire history.
The perception that the only "real" anarchism is the western :anarchism: can be called at least unfortunate, as there are many interesting ideas in many places.

I would like a lot to have something like #IndigenousAnarchism or #GlobalAnarchism hashtags to know more about antiauthoritarian perspectives from the global south.

Hey, everyone

My partner and I are currently working on a docuseries, @Elememts_of_MA, about the origins, structures, healing ways, and logistics of mutual aid-based organizing. The project isn't exclusively profiling anarchist groups, but it is deeply anti-authoritarian - we're especially staying away from charismatic leaders and celeb "activist" types.

The whole thing is independent - no producers; everything is out of pocket. We've been living out of a van we converted so we could make this happen; which has been amazing. We've been on the road since May Day this year, and have already filmed some solid interviews as far north as Montreal and as far south as Puerto Rico.

However, I'm personally struggling to find Black organizations or collectives that aren't MLM, AADOS, authoritarian, Black Capitalist, nonprofit style groups. Reading and theory groups or media collectives are rad, but I'm really looking for groups that're doing interesting work on the ground (*not food distro*) from an anti-state-nationalist analysis.

Lorenzo and JoNina Irvin will appear in the film, among other radical Black people like Jessica Gordon Nembhard, The Northeast Action Collective in Houston, and Arm the Girls in Oakland. So, I'm not at a complete loss.

But, please send me all the rad groups of Black people you know that are creating long-term, democratic, mutual aid projects in their communities. They do not need to identify as anarchist, but they *cannot* be down with the nation state and have to be doing more than food distro.

Beyond all that, I'm also really interested in connecting with people to write Star Wars analysis and fan-fiction. I think the galaxy far, far away is an interesting canvas to explore the tensions of autonomous world building vs authoritarian revolutionary movements. If I lived in that universe, I'd no doubt be getting into arguments with the Rebel Alliance.

The Elements of Mutual Aid is an independently-produced #documentary series.

Through four, hour-long chapters - fire, earth, water, and air - we'll explore the origins and misconceptions, infrastructures, healing ways, pitfalls and logistics of revolutionary mutual aid against the nation-state.

We hope that this project will offer critical insights into not only what kind of projects are happening today, but how they work on the ground.

This is 100% grassroots. All of our equipment has been paid for out of pocket, we're traveling on our own schedule, and we'll distribute the film independently when it's complete. We've been supported by our comrades and relations to raise money to pay our participants for their interviews - which is highly uncommon in documentary film production.

It's important to us to weave our politics into the way we make this film. We’re not “neutral” or “objective” observers. We’re active participants in revolutionary direct action. Like Gordon Parks once said, the camera is our choice of weapon - at least in this iteration of the struggle.

Hi, all! Good to be here.

The Elements of Mutual Aid is an independently-produced #documentary series.

Through four, hour-long chapters - fire, earth, water, and air - we'll explore the origins and misconceptions, infrastructures, healing ways, pitfalls and logistics of revolutionary mutual aid against the nation-state.

We hope that this project will offer critical insights into not only what kind of projects are happening today, but how they work on the ground.

This is 100% grassroots. All of our equipment has been paid for out of pocket, we're traveling on our own schedule, and we'll distribute the film independently when it's complete. We've been supported by our comrades and relations to raise money to pay our participants for their interviews - which is highly uncommon in documentary film production.

It's important to us to weave our politics into the way we make this film. We’re not “neutral” or “objective” observers. We’re active participants in revolutionary direct action. Like Gordon Parks once said, the camera is our choice of weapon - at least in this iteration of the struggle.
