Does anyone have any experience with managing a fan wiki?

I am maybe looking to setting up a wiki project for a book series that does not appear to have its own wiki yet.

I don't mean the technical side of things – I am pretty sure I can get that set up myself – but rather about the social and administrative side of it.

For example, how are the legal aspects of hosting and managing a fan wiki? Am I realistically putting myself at risk legally if I own, host and contribute to of a fan site? What are some pitfalls I should avoid? How effective are disclaimers in avoiding risk? Should I try and reach out to the author for permission, or would that put him in a spot where he feels like he'd have to sign his name on some fan project and get in hot water if that project goes awry?

Further, how is the best way to go about managing a wiki's multi-user aspects? I am pretty sure the potential spam and vandalism would wildly outweigh genuine contributions, but a wiki without open registration which is only edited by me is hardly a community wiki, is it?

Where is the indie wiki community situated these days, i. e. the ones who organised the ongoing move away from the predatory hosters Fandom and Fextralife? The only thing I can find is their browser extension that rewrites fandom links to go to the independent ones, but not any community around hosting.

Note: If you view our wiki using the (non-default) Vector 2010 skin, the logo does not appear correctly in the upper-left-hand corner. We are looking in to it. It renders correctly in the favicon, as well as if you are using the default skin (Vector 2022).

Eight years ago today, our former admin Miiohau founded Rain Wiki on Fandom. One year ago, the wiki was mostly abandoned, as Fandom's evil behaviour had pushed the community away.

In March of this year, @AwesomeGamer forked Rain Wiki onto @[email protected]. The title was changed to Rainverse Wiki and expanded to cover My Impossible Soulmate, and we moved to the domain https://rainverse.wiki, thanks to @[email protected]. In the past four months, our small team revitalized the wiki with more than 10,000 edits and more than 1,000 new content articles. We now have articles with transcripts for every page of both Rain and and My Impossible Soulmate, thanks to @[email protected].
