  1. I watched four documentaries, from gay US politicians & legislation, to the Fukushima disaster. I watched a movie chronicling the band Joy Division & a fun story about students who created a secret apartment in a mall complex.

I took part in the #IndiewebMovieClub, where @artlung suggested two surfing documentaries: The Endless Summer & Girls Can't Surf. Two wildly different movies, one filmed like a home video & the other a standard talking-heads affair.

I also watched Drive to Survive.

  5. Welcome to the May 2025 edition of IndieWeb Movie Club!

As your host for this month¹, I invite you to (re)watch the film “Tomorrowland” (https://movies.disney.com/tomorrowland), with an optional prequel book reading assignment!

“Before Tomorrowland” (https://books.disney.com/book/before-tomorrowland/) was released about a month before the film, so it’s fine to read before watching.

#Tomorrowland is available in various physical media formats, and via streaming on DisneyPlus². 130 minutes, rated PG.

This month is the 10th anniversary of Tomorrowland’s release.

The world was quite different in 2015.

I had my own impressions of Tomorrowland when I first heard about it and then watched it much later (which I won’t link to yet to avoid spoilers or biasing your opinions). The film made such a strong impression on me that I held a group film viewing and discussion party in 2015!

I’m curious how both first time viewers in 2025 and folks watching a second (or more) time think of Tomorrowland.

If you would like to participate in this month’s IndieWeb Movie Club:
    * optional: read the prequel book
    * watch the film
    * blog a read³ (for the book), watch, review, or even a simple note post of your impressions, or some or all the above and link to this post

If you want your post(s) to be included in the May 2025 IndieWeb Movie Club roundup, notify me with a Webmention from your post, or drop a link in the IndieWeb chat discussion channel and @-mention me.

Since this is an IndieWeb community activity, please both follow the Code of Conduct, and also keep your post within the same rating (PG) as the movie. I may curate the roundup accordingly.

    Happy reading, watching, and dreaming!

  14. There were two other stand-out movies:

Redux Redux (8/10), which is a violent sci-fi movie about acting out revenge across multiple parallel universes.

And Nowhere Special (8/10), which is a gut-wrenching movie about a single parent who has been given only a few months to live, and is searching for foster parents for his toddler.

I also watched the visual treat "Winged Migration" for the #IndieWebMovieClub

  15. I watched the 1995 crime thriller Hackers for #IndieWebMovieClub and two very interesting movies about "Scientific Soulmates".

There was an eclectic mix of documentaries; one focusing on physical and mental endurance, and one about a mysterious 1970s musical hero. One documentary about a revered sushi chef, and another documenting the life of iconic comedian John Candy.

I watched four shorts, each very unique. I also watched six movies starring Dakota Johnson and four starring Imogen Poots.

  16. IndieWeb Movie Club: June 2025 - Mary Poppins

This post is my entry for this months IndieWeb Movie Club hosted by Jo

    fed.brid.gy/r/https://www.benj

  17. This post is my actual entry for IndieWeb Movie Club #006.

Mark is hosting this month's IndieWeb Movie Club and there are still a little time if you are interested in watching any of the many adaptations of Romeo and Juliet.

I watched the following three films for this month's movie club:

    Rewatched Romeo + Juliet, 1996 - ★★★★

    Romeo + Juliet

    Romeo + Juliet (1996)

This has been on my "to rewatch" list for a long time but I kept putting it off as I didn't want the memory of a movie I remember liking to be ruined. Luckily, this movie still holds up to me.

The second half of the film kinda drags on a bit I kinda wish it had a bit more of the "flair" that the first half does, but this might just be my bias because I always loved Harold Perrineau's performance as Mercutio and he dies in the first half.

Before this movie club, this was the only version of Romeo and Juliet I had ever seen so this has always been my point of reference for this story.

    Watched Die in a Gunfight, 2021 - ★

    Die in a Gunfight

    Die in a Gunfight (2021)

I don't even know where to begin with this one. I found this movie in some list after searching for "List of movies based on Romeo and Juliet" and only watched it because I didn't see it on any other list. Maybe this was a hidden gem and I was about to unearth the greatest adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in modern cinema history.

This felt like it was trying to parody the Romeo and Juliet story and Baz Luhrmann's adaptation. It was uncomfortable to watch and I don't know if I would consider this even a loose adaptation of the original story as the only thing it really shares is the two big families not wanting their kids together.

There is a neat animation to tell the prologue and some of the sets and outfits really are beautiful to see.

    Watched Romeo & Juliet, 2021 - ★

    Die in a Gunfight

    Romeo & Juliet (2021)

This film was a complete surprise to me. I chose it because I wanted to see a stage adaptation and the fact that this was filmed the way it was in the middle of a global pandemic is kind amazing. The way this film transitions from stage to the bigger film sets gives it a sense of magic that adds so much to this adaptation.

Not to discredit the other films I watched here, but this was the only version of the three where I actually believed the characters fell in love as quick and as strong as they did.

I think if I'm pointing anyone to a Romeo and Juliet adaptation, this would probably be it for me.

    Final thoughts

How does this story get to tell us how it ends 2 seconds in and I'm still hoping it doesn't end that way? What if Romeo waited an extra minute? What if he had heard of Juliet's plan? What if their parents weren't enemies? What if...

  18. September has come and gone and so had another IndieWeb Movie Club. I was very excited to host this month's movie club and am looking forward to host more of these in the future. When Harry Met Sally... (1989) might have been a slight change of pace from September's Movie Club but this to me is the exciting thing about this movie club. It's like a box of chocolates. Wait, that's a different movie.

October's Movie Club is hosted by James where the movie to watch is The Wizard of Oz (1939).

    Submissions

Sara discusses the harmful messages this movie uses as it's central thesis and lists several pieces of media where the same romance genre can portray similar ideas without needing to fall into stereotypical messages. There's a lot of good recommendations here so it's definitely worth checking them out.

    Thanks Sara!

Antonio is a big fan of romcoms so his appreciation for the movie comes through in his post. The connection about loneliness in a big city was something that once I read him point out, I could not unsee.

    Thanks for your post Antonio.

Paolo's post covers some details about the making of the film and how much of real life was put into it. They also consider the original ending and how it would have affected the whole experience. I agree fully with Paolo here and wish this was an alternate version we could see.

    Lovely post Paolo.
