  2. News Podcast: Indie Manga Alliance Launches, Libro.fm Adds E-books, and Readers Fail to Spot AI Stories

On this week's Self-Publishing News podcast, ALLi News Editor Dan Holloway brings two pieces of good news for indie authors: the launch of the Indie Manga Alliance, a new US-based group representing manga creators and publishers outside the mainstream, and Libro.fm's expansion into e-books, giving readers another way to support indie authors and bookstores at the same time. Then he digs into a new Cambridge University Press study, "Bot or Not?", which found that readers not only struggle to tell human-written stories from AI-generated ones — they may actually prefer the AI versions.

  3. News Podcast: KDP Raises Its Top Royalty Ceiling; Bookshop.org Launches UK Audiobooks; Dystomance Is the New Romantasy

On this episode of Self-Publishing with ALLi, Dan Holloway covers three positive stories: KDP raising the upper price limit for its top royalty bracket from $9.99 to $12.99, effective July 7th; Bookshop.org launching audiobooks for UK readers on a £12.99 monthly subscription designed to deepen ties between readers and their local indie bookstores; and the rise of dystomance — the blend of dystopia and romance trending on BookTok, with a self-published title helping drive the wave.

  9. News Summary: Bookshop.org Sales Surge 55% to $70 Million; E-books Now 5% of Total Sales

We start the week with some good news that segues interestingly out of the news that many indie authors have found alarming at the end of last week. The indie corner of the internet has been filled with little other than discussion (much heated) of Draft2Digital's decision to introduce fees for new and low-activity accounts in the face (it claims) of a vast increase in artificially generated content.

  12. The City & The City posted their 2025 bestsellers and we love to see a Stelliform book on the list! Also of note: the book is on the list because it is great, yes, but also because The City & The City read and loved it and recommended it and made it a bookclub feature. Indie bookstores are THE BEST.

  13. Countdown is on!

At the end of 2025, I'm closing The Scribbling Lion as an indie bookstore and shifting focus to selling my own books.

There are still lots of great holiday gifts left on the shelves, and I'm about to post a very sharp markdown in service of ending the year with an empty store.

Check out the Shop, and watch the hashtag #scribblinglion for the sale to start!

  15. I will also, in full honesty, note that I had to overlook a couple of "seriously?" moments. For instance, everyone seems to be able to run around and engage in combat for hours on end and not get tired. They just jump into the next adventure. That, I had to kind of squint past. A couple small things. But this book still lands solidly in the "worth reading" category.

And I just discovered I should use the tags #FediBookstore and #FediFiction. So there's that. :)

  16. I finally read "Time Reavers" by Jacob Holo. I've had it in inventory but I've honestly been afraid to read it because a friend asked me to stock it for a convention.

I did read the preview chapter before stocking it, so I knew it was good writing, but I was hesitant to read the whole thing. Maybe because Holo has worked on books with Weber, and I don't like Weber's writing. Maybe because a friend was involved, and I'm always worried about disappointing a friend if I don't like a book they like.

But I've read it. And ... it's good. It's a really damn fun story, with lots of snark and fast, science fiction action-adventure pacing.

It starts out fast and stays there: a young woman finds herself separated from her school group in a busy train station. As she starts to search, she realizes that time has stopped all around her, leaving her the only movement in a suddenly very creepy world.

Cue a metallic monster erupting onto the scene, targeting her for a then-unknown reason, and the plot is up and running as fast as she is. Cue a snarky, irreverent rescuer, who whisks her away into a fantastical life of danger and secret technology.

It's a story about multiple dimensions, a secret war,, unexpected allies, developing friendships, and blowing up lots of bad guys.

In short (too late!), it's worth reading. Pick up an ebook at the usual places, or a print copy here:

  18. Looks like libro.fm is having a weeklong sale leading up to Indie Bookstore Day* and there are lots of great deals for DRM-free audiobooks!!! I've already gotten three in addition to my monthly credit and I may buy more 😆

*I think the name varies, but this is the name for the Canadian version, organized by the Canadian Independent Booksellers Association. They even have a website to help people fine indie booksellers!!!

  19. Finally picked up *months* of orders that I placed at the queer bookshop down the street, Birdie Books. I thought they'd be a bit upset that I was planning orders and not picking them up, but no, they're happy I'm a customer!

Shopping there and buying from them is a much, *much* better experience than Amazon. Seriously. If you haven't, find your closest indie bookstore, you'll love it!

The books, all of which I'm excited to get to:

    - HUMANKIND, Rutger Bregman
    - SUNRISE ON THE REAPING, Suzanne Collins
    - THE LAST AMERICAN ROAD TRIP, Sarah Kendzior
    - PAPER DOLL, Dylan Mulvaney
    - THE QUEER ALLIES BIBLE, NV Gay
    - THE STONEWALL READER, anthology
    - TRANSGENDER HISTORY, Susan Stryker
