I’m a genre writer, but I’ve never been one to lean so heavy into the genre I’m writing that I feel the need to follow all the standard tropes, rules, and expectations. Often the fun in reading is the unexpected. Use what’s there, sure, but don’t be so fully committed to a pattern that it’s predictable.
But mostly it’s because I find themes and characterization are way more engaging to me than any rules of the genre.
