Dancer Hilda Holger (1905-2001) was born to a liberal Jewish family in Vienna Austria. After the Nazi takeover, she attempted to flee. With entry to Britain denied she made her way to safety in India. Her mother and 14 other relatives perished in the holocaust. In India Holger was inspired by Indian art & incorporated many hand movements from Indian dance into her work. As a teacher her classes were open to students of all races, religions & nationalities as well as those with physical challenges. Eventually Holger immigrated to Britain where she continued to teach just weeks before her death at age 95!

I have become entranced by #indianClassicalDance recently, specifically Barathanatyam and Odissi styles (there are 7-9 regional styles depending on the expert cited). The dances are so technical, with tons of proscribed eye, hand, body and foot movements. It takes years of practice to master. And the dance is a form of yoga, very spiritual and very beautiful.
