The white rose was originally the emblem of the Jacobites — supporters of the exiled House of Stuart after James VII was removed from the throne during the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

The movement reached its most famous moment under Charles Edward Stuart during the 1745 uprising, which ended in defeat at Battle of Culloden.

Michelle O’Neill met with the SNP’s new Westminster leader Dave Doogan and Plaid Cymru’s Liz Saville Roberts, following the two parties' historic wins in last week's elections.

It is understood to be the first meeting of the three parties since the Scottish and Welsh elections where pro-independence parties secured landslide victories.

  4. @JackTheCat Independence for Scotland is not the preserve of just one party. While the SNP and the Greens place independence front and centre of their politics, anyone else is welcome to join their belief that self-determination for the people of Scotland has to be better than the shambles we see year after year in Westminster. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

While the SNP didn’t reach the magic number, combined with the Scottish Greens returning a record 15 MSPs, Holyrood’s pro-independence majority now sits at a record high, with 73 MSPs.

Shortly afterwards, a Downing Street spokesperson made sure to insist that Starmer had told Swinney that Labour does not support independence.

"After a decade of Brexit, austerity cuts, six Prime Ministers, and a never-ending cost of living crisis - Britain is more broken than ever. It's clear real change will never come from Westminster.

"The only way for Scotland to secure a better future is with the fresh start of independence, so we can use our huge energy wealth to lower bills and invest in our communities."

A spokesperson for No 10 has seemingly rolled back on the talks of a second referendum, claiming the manifesto the Labour government was elected on was “unambiguous” that it does not support Scottish independence.

Swinney is set to meet the embattled PM after a late-night phone call on Tuesday, reports indicate.

During the call, Starmer appears to have opened the door for a second independence referendum, with the Scottish Government claiming Starmer had agreed that Westminster's refusal to "consider Scotland’s right to decide" is "unsustainable".

BOTH John Swinney and Northern Irish First Minister Michelle O'Neill have congratulated Rhun ap Iorwerth after he was elected as the Welsh First Minister on Tuesday.

Ap Iorwerth won the nomination after a roll call of Members of the Senedd. He was voted by 44 votes to Dan Thomas's 34. Darren Millar had seven, while there were nine abstentions.

  14. There was a day and a time when Starmer’s travails would have had more of an impact in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. No more. It has almost been reduced to a sideshow. As englandshire centric as ever they assume it is a primary concern for us Celts. They're wrong. Our respective destinys lie elsewhere, and apart, from a decaying and socially volatile nation which can't stand on its own two feet, knows this and is terrified of our forthcoming independence.

Keith Brown, the SNP’s depute (deputy) leader, said:

"This is yet another Westminster government consumed by chaos which is now the permanent pattern on that place.

"Broken, Brexit Britain is in terminal decline lurching from scandal to scandal and the question is no longer will Keir Starmer go? The question is when will Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland go."

These results send a clear message to all those who still cling to the deeply-embedded assumption in Westminster thinking that the English have a colonial right to rule the UK.

What Scotland and Wales, along with Northern Ireland, where Sinn Fein leads the government, are now saying in unison is that this presumption is no longer acceptable to the people of all three of those countries.

The election shows rejection of English colonialism

  21. @rameshgupta @gthomson I would rather rather take my chances, as would a whole lot more #ScottishIndependence #IndependenceIsNormal folks, with Europe & whatever Eurocentric organisation comes after NATO, than be dragged down with the USA regime to which the UK government, (for which we did not vote,) has firmly aligned. Scottish independence is the antidote to Brexit, not a justification for staying with the sinking ship! Too wee, too poor, too stupid? Aye right
