  1. The impact of megafires on biodiversity

Fires are becoming more severe, extensive, and frequent due to human-caused climate change.

“The impact of bushfires on wildlife can be catastrophic. Native animals are often unable to escape fires and are highly vulnerable to death, dehydration, disorientation, burns, injury, and the loss of food and habitat."

  4. The black summer bushfires’ toll on the vets and carers helping Australian wildlife

"When the 2019-20 fires erupted Veterinarians and carers responded on the front lines. In December 2019 the sky went black in many parts of Australia. In the following weeks, unprecedented bushfires killed 33 people, destroyed thousands of homes, decimated about 3bn animals and 24m hectares of habitat...Smoke was circumventing the globe."

    "The trauma doesn’t go away."

Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) is causing hotter, drier conditions and is increasing the risk of bushfires.

    > Leave fossil fuels in the ground
    > Stop incinerating bio-diversity
    > Pay vets to treat Australian wildlife injured by bushfires and combustion engine infrastructure impacts.
    > Support volunteer carers for wildlife

  5. Are industrial scale burns incinerating Australian biodiversity?

"The “industrial” scale burns which are designed to “process landscapes as efficiently as possible” are known to frequently kill – in 2022, Victorian authorities accidentally incinerated several koalas when they set a forest alight, and evidence suggests fires set in Tasmania have killed endangered devils."

"A complete “rethink” of fire management practices by state authorities" is needed.

  6. Megafires - A rethink is needed

"We should not forget that Australia’s 2019-20 megafires were the predictable consequence of climate change. The alternative fire management approaches we suggest will likely fail if climate change continues unabated.

"Bushfire management agencies aim to reduce fire risks through frequent fuel-reduction burning...But our research suggests this practice, which increases fire frequency, may create larger disruptions to ecosystems when big bushfires occur...Alternative approaches to large-scale prescribed burning are required.">>
