That tiny caterpillar is almost exactly "one inch" long (issun). It looks like a completely helpless, inanimate piece of dirt or wood. But under that mask, it has the "soul" (tamashii) and intelligence to spin an invisible safety rope, defy gravity, and actively outsmart the entire forest. It has its own brilliant way of surviving against the odds. -

You could say that by developing such an incredibly elaborate, mind-bogglingly perfect disguise, this tiny, defenseless caterpillar found a way to "turn" against the harsh laws of nature. It’s the ultimate underdog story: a helpless, squishy little bug successfully outsmarting the entire avian kingdom just by standing incredibly still. -

Does it apply to our little twig-mimic (inchworm)?In a literal sense: No, because this "worm" is an absolute pacifist. If a bird or a human touches it, it won't bite, sting, or turn to fight. Its entire survival strategy is based on doubling down on its passivity—freezing completely solid and playing the part of a stick even harder.

Fall cankerworm (Alsophila pometaria). If you have a moment to enlarge the image, check out the reduced 3rd proleg on the left-hand side of the loop, toward the bottom. Most lineages of the Geometridae have lost this A5 proleg completely, so this is very useful for identification. Fast-moving, arboreal caterpillars tend to have reduced numbers of prolegs. I'd never seen an inchworm before, at least I don't recall seeing one this pretty.
I believe the second one is a caterpillar, or a larva of some sort. It surprised me when I was taking pictures of the pink fuzzball I posted earlier in this thread.
