  1. Been thinking of switching my server OS to one that is immutable. I have no technical need for it other than the experience points of using one.

I was thinking of openSUSE MicroOS because I like the mascot and that openSUSE also makes a good desktop OS. I like having my desktop and server being somewhat similar so that my tinkering is transferable and any scripts I write are also used across my devices.

I am pretty happy with the set up I have landed on so depending on how I feel over the summer I may or may not.

  6. I'm just getting into using containers for user stuff on an atomic desktop, but is it bonkers to something like:

distrobox-host-exec distrobox enter Arch -- nvim

To execute something from one container in another? It feels intuitive enough, but like almost *too* straightforward...

  13. I just tried out #Fedora #SilverBlue and it is amazing. Having an #ImmutableOS, having #Flatpak and #Toolbox is an absolute genius idea.

Although this is great, I prefer #Debian. Then I found #Distrobox which does essentially the same. It is written in #Bash and uses #Podman or other #container solutions.

This way I can run #Debian stable which will eventually have some out-dated but rock solid software but I may need some newer software. Or software that I don't want to install on my system

  14. The KDE project team officially released the alpha version of KDE Linux! A new immutable OS built using Arch Linux Packages!

  15. @triskelion @purism I appreciate what GrapheneOS and other projects are doing. I wish gOS good luck in:
    - getting early access to future #AOSP sources as development is no longer public.
    - fixing the myriad of #Google shenanigans with the OS and Chromium.
    - getting mental health help for the main developer - he deserves all the help he can get.

Unlike gOS, #Linuxphone development is not riding on decades of Google funded development of the OS. Progress is therefore slower but it is improving gradually.

Besides #PureOS, there is also #Mobian and #postmarketOS - I especially look forward to the latter's future #ImmutableOS version which would have security benefits as well.

  18. I recently came across akademy.kde.org/news/2024-09_a and a small piece caught my eye, "One way to achieve the desired level of integration is to control the entire software stack, right down to the operating system. This is also in the works for KDE, as Harald Sitter is working on a new technologically advanced operating system tentatively named KDE Linux". Has anyone tried it? It seems to be available at invent.kde.org/sitter/kde-linu cc: @akademy #kde #ImmutableOS

  19. I'm currently thinking about dual booting my office notebook with a second (personal) Linux OS but I want to have an immutable one.
I'm currently having a look at NixOS (with Lix as Package Manager).
Does anyone have any strong opinions and/or suggestions regarding my choice of Distro.

Edit: Also SecureBoot support is a must. (Does not need to be signed by Microsoft)

  20. Hearing a lot of excitement around NixOS from some time but never gave it a try yet. Might give it a go on a VM and see.

There are already several #immutable linux #distros available. Run any of the following on top: #flatpaks, #appimages #snaps, Compatibility layers like #WINE or #Anbox, #virtualized OSes, tools like #distrobox, #emulators, etc, & never worry about system stability again—pieces of the next generation linux puzzle!

I was already excited by the concept of #distroagnostic packaging uniting the linux realm, but the ideas of an #ImmutableOS completes the picture!

  22. Hello fedi! I'm making my own immutable distro, and I've got some questions:

    • what should I use to build? I was thinking bluebuild hut it might be more trouble than it saves, as I need to do stuff like add an extra btrfs subvolume on install, and I'd like a custom gtk4 installer.
    • other than that, assuming I use bluebuild for now, would a structure like this work?

    • core - has core system stuff, like kernel, bootloader, etc. Included in image, needs reboot to apply

    • other/system - has other stuff like system flatpaks, config files, anything that doesn't need a reboot to change
Each would be cached so only core or other would be rebuilt depending on the last value.

    • other would use an overlay inside a btrfs sub volume. I was thinking I apply changes directly to the subvolume and rollback if they interrupt or an error occurs, but now I'm thinking a power cut or other force shutdown might mess that up.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks! You're helping to shape QuadOS! QuadOS currently has the following devs: Me, @Heliguy, and @winsdominoes. It aims to be like NixOS, but using flatpaks, and hopefully less janky.

  24. If you're a big fan of the OpenSUSE immutable distros (MicroOs, LeapMicro, SLE Micro) and your "transactional-update" fails to run over and over like mine did this morning for one of my MicroOS nodes ... a TU equivalent of "dup" or "up" just fails -- it did recommend a zypper dup -- drop as root, into a transactional-update shell, re-run your zypper dup, exit and reboot, should be good.

  25. #linux #linuxtablet #linuxaudio I have seen (and finally understand) the future of Linux! An #immutableOS running distro-agnostic #sandboxed packaging formats! I just learned about OS # immutability and all of the puzzle pieces of the future of linux fell into place for me! The future for linux looks absolutely brilliant!!
