Still got time to turn it all aroundI had something completely different in mind for today’s post (another time, Henry Rollins), but the world lost a real one this week and when I looked for a way to include her, this song quickly emerged. And this performance? PREACH, Dolly.
Dolly stood vocally against the scourge that has infected the U.S.; long before the pop stars of the day took on country music as vanity projects, Dolly was all about inclusion, demonstrating that #CountryMusic need not solely be the bastion of rednecks, a gentle way of saying RACIST.
Her commitment to combat #illiteracy with her #ImaginationLibrary is well known, borne from her childhood observation of her father’s shame at being unable to read and write, but does the world know about her funding of COVID-19 #vaccine research? (I remember the guy from Vinyl Me Please explaining a delay in their release of some Dolly LPs, saying with some shame that they were waiting for her approval of color variants while she was busy evaluating efforts in vaccine research to fund.) She developed her theme park #Dollywood in the #Tennessee Smokies to provide employment in the economically depressed area where she grew up dirt poor, and she provided funding, in many cases on an ongoing basis, to other causes and groups whose need touched her heart. Dolly was the embodiment of the maxim “Do well and do good.”
Most of her music is not to my taste, but she was undeniably a prodigious artist and talent with the voice of an angel and the heart of a lioness. She became a star and used stardom to become an INDUSTRY…for good.

R.I.P. Dolly Parton (1946-2026)
Dolly Parton, pictured in 1988Country Music isn’t really my thing, but I was very sad when I heard the news a couple of days ago about the death of Dolly Parton. So sad, in fact, that I felt I had to wait a while before posting anything. I have little to add to the obituaries about her now, but I’ll just mention some things that I liked about her. O
ne was that she was totally accepting of the LGBTQ+ people, which is why she was adopted so enthusiastically even by people like me who aren’t really country music fans. Her unoffocial motto was “Find out who you are and do it on purpose”. That is admirable advice. Even during the ongoing backlash of bigotry she stood her ground. For that alone I would mourn her passing.
The second thing that I should say mention is her philanthropy. She was a tireless supporter of good causes, especially her wonderful Imagination Library (which has had a branch in the Republic of Ireland since 2019). This exists to encourage young children to read by giving them free books. Here in Ireland An Post delivers them for free too. As well as this and other public initiatives there are countless private acts of kindness, little gifts and words of encouragement. These days it seems unfashionable to be both rich and generous. Certainly one can’t imagine Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos and their ilk giving any of their vast fortunes to any good cause.
Another thing about Dolly Parton that I adored was her self-deprecating humour. I regularly saw her on TV disarming someone who tried to mock her style and appearance by parodying herself. She always seemed to be down-to-earth and completely without pretentions. Of course I never met Dolly Parton, but I really think I would have liked her if I had.
I’ve already stated that I am not the biggest fan of Country Music but some of Dolly Parton’s songs crossed over and became huge popular hits. This one is one that I really do like. This is the original version of I Will Always Love You later covered by Whitney Houston, but I like it this version better. Incidentally, it was written on the same day as another smash hit of hers, Jolene.

Dolly Parton was the first singer I ever saw live. I was 9 and my family went to see her with the Statler Brothers as an opener. It was fantastic, and I've loved her since I was a kid.
This one hurts like Bowie and Prince for me. As @tiffanycli said, she wasn't just a talented musician and actor, but an all around magnificent human being whose kindness and love was felt all over. The world is a little worse off with her loss.
Rest in peace with your beloved Carl, Dolly. We will miss you.
