  3. of a doddering fool. Part n/x
were the downfall of any hopes I had for a career in science. Algebra was required for a major in any science. You had to not only take it, you had to pass it and my brain just couldn’t do it. Organic chemistry didn’t help either, but I’d already failed algebra twice so I didn’t really put much effort into it, as in studying. But I’ve held onto a broad interest in sciency stuff in general to this day.

  8. Once again, we need to use #EllipticalIntegrals but in an unfamiliar regime where some parameters are #ImaginaryNumbers, (actually, you can just treat the square values as being negative) but you can get exact expressions for the behaviour.

  13. Listening to some music. The Algorithm Overlords surfaced this band for me, and I clicked on them because, hey, as a math person, I agree that i is a number:

    youtube.com/@Number_i_official

    ...and I kinda like 'em!

FWIW, other Japanese bands that I like and think you should check out: Otokobe Beaver; ATARASHII GAKKO (I think all-caps is mandatory?), Wanima, and...some others I don't recall at the moment.

  18. Imaginary numbers are numbers that involve the square root of a negative one. They are not imaginary in the sense of being unreal but rather in the sense of being orthogonal to the real number line . Imaginary numbers have many applications in science, engineering, and mathematics, such as describing rotations, waves, and quantum phenomena.

  23. “Now imagine a number?”

    “You want an imaginary number?”

    “Yes, Imagine it.”

    “Okay.”

“No, I’m going to read your mind… hmm… was the number 369.”

“No, the number you gave me is a real number.”

“Yes, but… anyhow. Let me try again… hmm… was it the number 185.”

“No, that one is real too.”

“What does real or imaginary have anything to do with anything? Of course the numbers I give you are real numbers. What number did you pick?”

    “10i”

    “What?”

    “10i. That’s an imaginary number.”

“What’s this ‘i’ thing in it.”

“It’s the square root of -1. That’s what makes it imaginary.”

“That makes no sense. Now, I suppose that you can do 10i + 2, right?”

“Well, yes. That’s a complex number.”
