My new project, https://AltTextHallOfFame.org, is a celebration of the effort, ingenuity, and creativity that goes into making the web a friendlier and more inclusive place, one captioned image at a time.

📢 Hey Mastodon friends! Here's a quick reminder about the importance of adding image captions to your posts.
🖼️🔍By providing captions, you're making your content more accessible to those with visual impairments, ensuring they can fully enjoy and engage in the conversation.
🌐 It's a small effort that makes a huge difference for our fellow users, promoting inclusivity and enhancing the Mastodon experience for all. So, let's keep the community welcoming and accessible - don't forget to caption your images! 🤗🎉

Once again, here's a quick thank you to those who caption their images.
I'm not visually impaired, but i usually am in places with poor internet quality and low available bandwidth as a result.
Image descriptions help me to not "stay in the dark" of the content you post, and i don't have to wait for image to load to appreciate your effort and what it says.
Keep up the good work! I'll promise to do so as well

I just realized that Mastodon lets anyone read the image captions, so my habit of including little jokes about things (like describing a selfie as ‘stunningly beautiful’ or an unpleasant piece of art as ‘probably best experienced through this description’ ) would read super differently here 😅

@catselbow Tusky is the best one I've found for this so far. There are some quirks with scrolling but there is room for 2-3 *additional* edit lines.
Adding those would be a quantum jump in usability. And the quality of #ImageCaptions as well

I have a #StrangelySerious #KrisThought
I freely admit to being a member of #TheInflux & don't quite grok the entirety here but I've noticed something close to universal and maybe everyone else is just used to it, so accepts it
Long #ImageCaptions are the norm here. It's considered polite and good practice
So why can I only find one #Mastodon #Client that takes that into account? Every other one I have tried gives a pathetic one or two line edit area
It's a nightmare on a phone

You may not be able to hear the audio because of bad hearing or being completely deaf. Or your headphones have just run out of battery and you don't want to entertain everyone on the tram for your own privacy.
You also may be in a loud environment, like public transport, or in a quiet place like a library, or you just don't want to wake the kids or scare your cat. -

Why add a description to a video you may ask? If you can't hear the audio of the video, the description may help a lot, or make that video accessible to that person at all in the first place. Most videos on Mastodon are rather short, and many don't have a lot of complex dialog. A simple transcription goes a very long way for many reasons.

The Mastodon Web-interface will hint at a missing image description to remind you to add one.
While adding an alt-text you can also set a focus point which affects which part of your image is centred in a cropped/small view, aka the timeline.
Accessibility benefits *all* people, and *all* includes yourself! Even if you're not yet aware that you benefit from it!

Screen readers, searching, text-only clients, bots, people driving, or yourself at the optometrist, or looking for your glasses are just some examples for people who can't see your image or video right now.
Alt-Text explanations help if you're not familiar with the topic, missed a relevant detail on a small screen like your phone. Text can also be machine translated.

You may want to post a photo, image or video, not only text. There's a few things you can do to make that content more interesting and accessible to others.
Adding an image/video description, also known as alt-text helps those who cannot see the image when they come across your post. They may be colour blind in some way, or completely blind, using a screen reader.
