  6. While I was sitting on the low wall feeding the light colored iguana, the other one heard me whistling, which I do all the time while feeding them to reinforce the connection, and came across the yard. I held a mealworm up at the edge of the wall and tried to get its attention, but it just kept nipping at my toes instead.

The spiny lizards, like Bill and Cutie, regularly nip at my fingers and toes if I run out of worms, but this is the first time an iguana has done it.

  25. Three iguanas today! This one here, which is getting pretty friendly at this point so probably will get named soon, ate more mealworms than seemed physically possible. Then it flooped out on the wall to digest.

Then Donna, whom I haven't seen in several days, and a smaller, light colored iguana that I have never seen before were cavorting in the driveway. Based on their behavior, I am suspecting that Donna is actually Don. Either way, the light colored lizard was having no part of Donna's or Don's overtures. It's a very pretty lizard and I hope it stays around.

  26. *squeeeeeeee!!!*
New iguana! The smaller one in the background. The one in the front is Donna.

I'm out of mealworms, so I went to the fridge and got some greens. Donna was about 20 feet away and took a couple steps toward me when I whistled, but stopped. The little one, on the other hand, kept coming right up to me and eventually took some of the green leaves out of my hands. Very unexpected! It makes me wonder if maybe the fact that Donna was being so chill led the little one to feel safe enough to approach. Or maybe it was just so hungry it didn't care.

I also observed something I've never seen other lizards to: on several occasions, the little one lightly licked the tip of Donna's tail. I'm presuming this is some sort of courtship behavior. I'm thinking it may turn out that Donna is actually Don.

  27. Out cold … in Sunrise, Florida, US, conservation officials are dealing with a spate of iguanas in torpor, handed in by residents who have found the reptiles immobilised by the cold. If temperatures drop low enough, iguanas will drop out of trees and stay immobile until they manage to warm up again.

  28. Iguana Tacos/Burritos

"For people who aren’t accustomed to cooking iguana, it is suggested that an easier route may be to
    make iguana tacos or burritos.
    Ingredients:
Iguana meat (cooked and cut into small pieces)
    Onion
    Chives
    Avocado
    Lime
    Chili-lime seasoning
    Curry or taco seasoning
    Sour cream
    Salsa
    Flour tortillas
    Directions:
    1. Wash the iguana meat thoroughly after removing the skin, organs and entrails, so that just
    the meat and cartilage remain.
    2. Put the iguana meat in boiling water. Add onions to the water for flavor.
Let cook for at least an hour or longer, until tender.
    3. Remove the tender meat from the cartilage. Cut into small pieces, separating the white and
dark meats, then season with whichever type of seasoning you enjoy in tacos/burritos.
    4. Season the white meat with chili-lime seasoning, curry or any other type of taco-type spice.
    5. Chop onions and chives, avocado, limes and other desired toppings.
    6. Mix the onions and chives in with the meat. Then, sauté the mixture on medium-high heat
    until it is soft.
    7. Place the meat in the center of a flour tortilla with avoca- do, sour cream, salsa and other
    toppings.
    8. Wrap and enjoy.

  34. 5 Invasive Species to Consider Hunting, Catching, and Cooking

by Erin Huggins, Feb 20, 2025

"National Invasive Species Awareness Week (Feb. 24-28, 2025) is here to remind us that some of the biggest ecological nightmares are critters that don’t belong here. These invasive species outcompete native wildlife, destroy habitats, damage roads and levees, and throw environments out of balance. But instead of just complaining, we can do something unexpected – eat them!

"Eating invasive species can help protect native animals and plants. By hunting, trapping, and eating these invaders, we can reduce their numbers and the harm they cause. To really manage invasive species well, we need a solid plan that includes teamwork, checking to see what’s working, using all tools available, and making sure to fix and protect damaged lands and waters.

"With that said, here are five troublesome invasive in the U.S. to consider putting on the table."
