  1. @jasmine this feels like a future #ignobelPrize if you write it up!

  2. The annual Ig Nobels, the awards for odd and funny scientific achievement, will be held outside the United States for the first time in its 36 years because of concerns about attendees' safety. The 2026 ceremony, which takes place in September ahead of the Nobel Prizes, will be held in Zurich. “We cannot in good conscience ask the new winners, or the international journalists who cover the event, to travel to the USA this year," Marc Abrahams, editor of event organizers the Annals of Improbable Research, told @AssociatedPress.

  3. A scientifically important fMRI study of a deceased salmon won an IgNobel Prize a while back. It’s still important.

  4. Not as legit as the #NobelPrize, not as infamous as the #IgNobelPrize, the #NoblePrize by the Journal of Immaterial Science has announced its winners for this year: immaterialscience.org/2025/nob…
  5. The 2025 #IgNobelPrize in #Psychology went to Marcin Zajenkowski & Gilles Gignac for showing that simply telling people they’re intelligent can instantly boost their #narcissism. Even more ironic: those who got positive feedback trusted the “scientific validity” of the #IQ test much more:

Just like in academia: we believe in the scientific truth of h-index, or Scopus, or GS, or even RG likes, depending on which one flatters us most.

  6. Perfect teaching material for Methods section writing: “Participants consumed an alcoholic drink (Smirnoff Red, 37.5% alcohol) mixed with bitter lemon…” 🍋🥂 #PhD students, take note: clear, precise, and… replicable 😅

  7. Meet the #2025 #IgNobelPrize winners
Established in 1991, the Ig Nobel are a good-natured #parody of the #NobelPrize; they honor "achievements that first make people laugh and then make them think."
Does alcohol enhance one's foreign language fluency? Do West African lizards have a preferred pizza topping? And can painting cows with zebra stripes help repel biting flies? These and other unusual #research questions were honored!

  8. A group of Japanese researchers won this year's Ig Nobel Prize for biology — a spoof of the Nobel Prize — for discovering that painting cows in a zebra pattern makes them attract fewer blood-feeding insects. japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/09/ #japan #ignobelprize

  9. The ceremony is webcast Sep 18!

One of my favourites of past winners:
    "DEMOGRAPHY PRIZE [AUSTRALIA, UK]
Saul Justin Newman, for detective work to discover that many of the people famous for having the longest lives lived in places that had lousy birth-and-death recordkeeping.

  10. @adapalmer And do not forget that the project is supported by Ig Nobel Prize-winning research! 🦏

  11. @stargazersmith I *want* to relate this to the druggie joke of "Have you ever *really* looked at your hand?" Another similar thing is "Have you ever really looked at a blank piece of paper?" But I've never heard that one presented as a joke... I'm not sure either is actually related to jamais vu though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Unfortunately, I know from experience that the, um, easiest way to induce jamais vu is a head injury. :-( #neuroscience #IgNobelPrize #dejaVu #jamaisVu #educateMe

  12. German researchers tested if side effects (e.g., a burning nose from a nasal spray) could enhance treatment. Turns out, they do! People felt less pain with placebo sprays causing mild side effects, believing "the meds work."

    :doi: doi.org/10.1093/brain/awae132

This makes us rethink: could even mild sensations (bitter taste, slight burning) make drugs seem more effective? 🤔 No wonder this study won an #IgNobelPrize - it’s both funny and thought-provoking!

  13. "Prof Roman Khonsari, a craniofacial surgeon at the Necker-Enfants Malades university hospital in Paris, and colleagues won the anatomy prize for their global study of hair whorls. While scalp hair spirals in a clockwise direction on most people, their research found, there is more counter-clockwise spiralling in the southern hemisphere."

  14. Nice to see folks discussing the papers that the #IgNobelPrize brought to light.

It really is one of the most effective, creative, and fun bits of #SciComm going!

  15. @GottaLaff #RFJjr had his brain eaten by worms 🪱 and forever tainted the #Kennedy family name, but his whale brain ‘research’ could earn him an #IgNobelPrize. Does this toot count as a nomination? #USpol #CitizenScience

  16. I just need to know: is anyone from the #USA going to the Ig Nobel prize discussion on the 11. November?

This year's bangers include a #physics prize for measuring the extent to which ocean water mixing is affected by anchovy sex & a #literature prize for studying the sensations people feel when they repeat a single word many, many, many, many times.

If you go, PLEASE tell me all about it! I want to live vicariously through you.
