📄 I have published my summary of the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) activities at #IETF126 in Vienna.
The report covers the Applied Networking Research Workshop (ANRW), the IRTF Open Meeting, and all 14 Research Groups—from AI networking and Internet architecture to routing, transport, privacy, sustainability, quantum networking, and more.
One aspect that makes the IRTF particularly valuable is its research model. Rather than organizing around individual publications, the IRTF is organized around long-lived research communities where researchers, engineers, implementers, operators, and standards experts collaboratively explore fundamental Internet challenges over many years.
At a time when AI is transforming how research is written, reviewed, and disseminated, sustained technical dialogue and open collaboration are becoming increasingly important.

6:00am on the last day of #IETF126 in Vienna, Austria. Younger me would have been opening the computer, wading into email, and engaging in vigorous debate.
Older, late-50s me says “Uh-uh! Don’t open that laptop! You get yourself outside and run a 5K so that you are around for a few more years!”🤯

This week, our team has been on the ground in Vienna for #IETF126!
When the Internet technical community comes together, great things happen. And events like IETF provide the perfect avenue for in-person discussion, collaboration, and progress. This week, we’re engaging with chapter members, working with policymakers, and furthering the important work of the Open Fibre Data Standard.

The number of times the AI note taking tool at #IETF126 has transcribed Mail User Agent as Male User Agent is over 9000.
I am not sure it is wrong.

This week at #IETF126 in Vienna, the Sovereign Tech Standards network is on the ground, working on standards that keep internet traffic from being misdirected, make encrypted email trustworthy and usable, bring secure connections to small connected devices, and improve how data travels across the modern web.
We'll be introducing all 2026 Sovereign Tech Standards network participants who are working with @ietf @w3c and ISO soon.

Fun experience watching the #WorldCup final in the hotel bar in Vienna, Austria, surrounded by a truly international group of people here for #IETF126, including a colleague from Spain!
I didn’t remotely care who won at the start, but I was glad Spain did, given how well they played, how much they possessed the ball, and how many shots they made on the goal.
Fun to watch and to feel the tension of the crowd!

Sharing this! Wish I'm not late for #IETF126
Tangled found PDS doesn't fit well for contributions even with upcoming permissioned space spec.
So, we are planning to store record-like data outside of PDS, in Knot. This is a post explaining the reasons & upstream spec change we need.

Spending my day at the #IETF126 Hackathon, talking to people about the Open Fibre Data Standard, #OFDS, https//ofds.info/ a specification for describing the *physical* infrastructure of the #Internet. It's important for #InternetResilience - if a wildfire destroys the infrastructure along a stretch of highway, it would be good to know what networks ran cable along there! OFDS has been in development since 2022, and is looking at the #IETF as a potential standards development organization (SDO).
