  1. NEW:

Yesterday, the USAO in Maryland issued a press release stating that Matthew Bathula, a clinical pharmacy specialist, had been charged with unauthorized access and ID theft involving patients at "Company A" -- a medical system in Maryland. 195 patients have been notified.

If you read the DOJ presser, it alleges a lot of activities that go waaaay beyond the usual insider "snooping."

A little digging revealed that "Company A" is the University of Maryland Medical Center, where Bathula was employed during the years of alleged wrongdoing.

  6. Tax documents for school employees potentially stolen across Los Angeles County:

At least two districts seem to have reported that employees discovered false tax returns had been filed, but the districts haven't been named, so DataBreaches started looking and may have identified one (then again, it may not be one of them!).

  11. Now this is tricky.

A friend got an email about changes to Paypal T&Cs.
The thing is she has never used Paypal.

The name on the PayPal account is someone she knows who may or may not be the person who's set up the account.
    So far so bad.

I'm honoured to be the lucky person she's asked to help sort this out but I think I'm out of my depth.

  13. Many class action lawsuits related to data breaches get dismissed for lack of standing when plaintiffs cannot show concrete injury or imminent harm. Or when they do allege concrete harm like fraud or IDtheft, they may have trouble showing it was due to that specific #databreach and not any of a gadzillion other breaches that have occurred.

In Webb v. Injured Workers Pharmacy, the lower court dismissed the suit because it didn't think the plaintiffs made a clear enough showing of tracing the harm to the breach.

The appellate court reversed and remanded.

After that, the case settled for more than $1M.

  14. Alleged Geisinger hacker will defend himself pro se.

What's that old adage about someone defending themself instead of using a lawyer? That they have a fool for a client?

I've uploaded two of his filings -- the motion to defend pro se, which was granted, and now an emergency motion to be temporarily released from prison because... well, he gives some reasons. You'll see.

    databreaches.net/2025/06/18/al

And fwiw, Nuance never responded to my inquiries at the time of his arrest asking about what kind of background check they had done because his history revealed a number of past run-ins with the law.

  19. @SpaceLifeForm @hello

I accepted an offer of free credit monitoring services once when I was really ticked off about a breach and wanted the entity to have to pay for it. But nowadays, I just keep a security freeze on my credit reports.

Speaking of which, Tom O'Malley had a good post in which he recommends that people put security freezes on all 6 of the following:

    👉 Experian
    👉 Equifax
    👉 TransUnion
    👉 Innovis
    👉 NCTUE (phone, utilities)
    👉 ChexSystems (new bank accounts)

  30. Has anyone heard of IDX.us? It's supposed to be an "identity protection service" like Lifelock. I am suspicious that it's not .com

I just got a letter from a law firm, Berry Dunn McNeil and Parker about a significant Sep 2023 health data breach involving my #data #privacy #ProtectedData #breach #IDtheft #DataSec

The data belonged to Reliable Networks of Maine. I haven't been in Maine since 1979 but maybe they handle national data.

I don't want to give IDX any data if this whole thing is a #scam or elaborate #phishing ruse #security
