Yesterday, the USAO in Maryland issued a press release stating that Matthew Bathula, a clinical pharmacy specialist, had been charged with unauthorized access and ID theft involving patients at "Company A" -- a medical system in Maryland. 195 patients have been notified.
If you read the DOJ presser, it alleges a lot of activities that go waaaay beyond the usual insider "snooping."
A little digging revealed that "Company A" is the University of Maryland Medical Center, where Bathula was employed during the years of alleged wrongdoing.

A friend got an email about changes to Paypal T&Cs.
The thing is she has never used Paypal.The name on the PayPal account is someone she knows who may or may not be the person who's set up the account.
So far so bad.I'm honoured to be the lucky person she's asked to help sort this out but I think I'm out of my depth.

Many class action lawsuits related to data breaches get dismissed for lack of standing when plaintiffs cannot show concrete injury or imminent harm. Or when they do allege concrete harm like fraud or IDtheft, they may have trouble showing it was due to that specific #databreach and not any of a gadzillion other breaches that have occurred.
In Webb v. Injured Workers Pharmacy, the lower court dismissed the suit because it didn't think the plaintiffs made a clear enough showing of tracing the harm to the breach.
The appellate court reversed and remanded.
After that, the case settled for more than $1M.

What's that old adage about someone defending themself instead of using a lawyer? That they have a fool for a client?
I've uploaded two of his filings -- the motion to defend pro se, which was granted, and now an emergency motion to be temporarily released from prison because... well, he gives some reasons. You'll see.

Anyone who's ever had a mortgage with Mr. Cooper is now at risk for ID theft and other fraud, because the leak includes SSN and bank account information.
Anyone affected should immediately start monitoring all financial accounts on a regular basis (weekly if possible) and checking credit reports on a regular basis (these are now available weekly).
