  1. Governor Little just signed HB 822, which forces teachers and health care professionals to out trans youth, into law. This is yet another harmful attack on transgender young people in Idaho, and we condemn lawmakers for it. #IDLeg #IDPol

  2. Honestly Idaho businesses would do well to make them all unigender bathrooms at this point.

These laws don't make any sense, and thus, are not only easy to thwart, but great opportunities for rapid transformation to progressive ideals.

  3. 😬

Thankfully I pass as my assigned gender. I've intentionally done little to change that, and my genderfluidity makes that possible for me, as does the acceptance of "tomboys" in farming towns. I've had no trouble passing as a tough woman in pants who likes her hair short.

I'm still not up to causing good trouble. But my county way up here is ripe to be challenged on this. People hold values here who wouldn't much like the TORT LAW and RED TAPE angle that REGULATES SMALL BUSINESSES over FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. This is solid NANNY STATE nonsense INVADING our LOCAL community.

(So much of the fash stuff actually goes against the language and values of the strain of conservatism that is popular in places like this. But I've got to stay on the DL. My mental health isn't up to a fight. That said, if anyone gave me guff, I could not help but lay into them. And I'd play up my femaleness without hesitation. You bitches will PROTECT ME, a poor damsel, over these TYRANTS from the GOVERNMENT.)

  4. Thankfully, I'm not the only one who raised issue with this story, as they did publish one (I think it's a letter to the editor) on Nov 18th opposing the city move and the locker room story.

This bit is probably behind the paywall:

"If the goal is truly to protect children, then let’s confront the real and well-documented dangers: poverty, familial sexual abuse, and inadequate maternal healthcare. These are the issues that harm children every day—not the existence of a tiny number of transgender people trying to use a bathroom.

"To portray our transgender neighbors as threats is not only outdated and misinformed; it is a deliberate distraction from real problems. And it raises a troubling question: whom will be targeted next? Lesbians? Gay men? Once we start banning people from the locker room, it’s a slippery slope."

Basically, we're not alone in rural areas. We just need help applying good pressure and causing good trouble.

  5. oh heh. Turns out the city vote was DIRECTLY related to the YMCA story. ffs.

So yeah, use your voice. If I, a person who is targeted by laws like these with a severe anxiety disorder, can do it, then so can you.

(The part behind the paywall says, "The issue was brought to council follow an incident at the Litehouse YMCA where a lifeguard said she saw a “semi-dressed” man in the women’s locker room. The YMCA said its locker room procedures followed Sandpoint’s non-discrimination ordinance.")

  6. One nice thing about local journalism, is that the people there are more likely to respond to individual opinion.

In the town where this paper is published, the city council recently voted to remove LGBTQ protections from their anti-discrimination policy, shortly after this story was published, and in spite of massive protest. These are connected.

  7. whew well I did the thing, called the local paper (from the county south of here) and canceled. I originally wanted to cancel because I'm broke, but then they published a really transphobic YMCA bathroom story on the front page in Nov. I was just waiting for a day when I had energy and my anxiety levels were manageable.

The woman on the phone took down my notes to pass to the editor. I offered that if they wanted to contact me with clarification, they could. lol now I have anxiety over that so lol maybe I shouldn't have offered. 😅 (While I'm not a trans woman, I am trans, so I'm not acting as an ally here, but putting myself out there, even if I didn't ID to them as trans. It really helps if yall allies could do this work, as I have hardly any emotional buffer between myself and this issue.)

I told them the story was one-sided and only offered the transphobic side but using inclusivity language. She was receptive and paid attention to my remarks.

The story is that some woman at the YMCA complained on Facebook about a trans woman (not using those terms, mind you... I'll bet you can guess), was using the bathroom while vulnerable women and children were around. Not all of the misgendering / fear mongering language was in quotes.

The only part of the other side they gave was YMCA making official statements about their policy being that they define gender as the person identifies. No outline of the reasons why that might be, that trans women are at least as vulnerable as cis women, or anything else. The transphpobic language took up the full text on the front page, and you had to turn to A6 to read the YMCA's statements.

I hope they email instead of call. I should have asked for that lol. I panicked. Probably if they call I'll let it go to voicemail, to see what tone they take before I call them back.

I originally subscribed to support local journalism, but this is not the kind of journalism I want to support. And I told her that.

  8. We did our traditional Halloween binge last night, and while I'm not hungover this morning, my body is working hard to process all that sugar. Ugh.

It's raining hard, so I feel no pressure to work on the insulation. But there's a talk in town about extremist hate groups in the region and what to do about them, that I'd really like to go to. For the first time this year, I don't feel I'd be white-knuckling it to do a social thing with strangers, BUT it would still be hard. And I want a break from doing things that are hard.

I feel like I'm talking myself out of it, and feeling relief, which probably means I should stay home. But I also get the sense that such opportunities to network with like-minded people here won't come along often.

    Here you go!

I'd really like to summarize the content of the following threads into a blog post format so it's not all scattered. But here are my post/thread/reply links on topics related to breaking through political and religious mind control to promote critical thinking, and assessing rural politics and stigmas, and building bridges. I've been in rural Idaho almost a year, and before that I was in the slightly-rural red-side of Washington state.

Some of these are replies to other people's threads where you might also find good info.

Shortest summary: Stay curious, ask questions, and focus on core shared values.

  18. Independent journalism is alive and well in Idaho.

I've gotten ahold of at least five print papers, some published daily, some monthly, some biannually, from just these two counties in the panhandle. Some are free at the grocery store.

The one I'm reading right now (The Reader, a weekly) published a syndicated article about the loss of OBGYN doctors in Idaho due to the abortion ban, originally published in a Boise-based nonprofit paper.

They all have a surprisingly left bent, though not always. The Reader and Northern Journeys are quite artistic and quirky.

  22. Just a little tip from a white American living on stolen land to other white people trying to decolonize:

Use your powers of commerce for good. Track down your local tribal businesses and shift your purchases over to them. (I know you have some – even living up north of Seattle I couldn't help but notice some, so I'm sure you'll find them if you actually go looking, and if not (say if you live on the side of the Mississippi where indigenous people were OUTLAWED), find some online.)

Money is power, so give some of your power to people who will use it for better things than Starbucks investors do.

  23. Oh!! And the huge convenience store which was where we stopped on the way home after our emergency visit up here last fall while making the decision to escape mom to up here, the one where I posted (or intended to post) a pic of the Bear Spray Recycling Bin, is owned by the tribe! I will be shopping there on purpose now. It's closer to where I live than down in Bonner's Ferry proper. Maybe I'll make that my main gas station.

I remember it was a REALLY nice convenience store. Rather huge, lots of lunch type foods, like real sandwiches. I was super in trauma-brain, so I can't describe my fragmented memories well, but I remember being quite impressed.

  24. I've been trying to get an accurate bead on the policing up here. Word from the human rights taskforce is that the three police forces, including Kootenai Tribal Police, cooperate, that they're aware of hate groups and keep an eye on them, and that they're not aggressive towards the left.

I'm trying to connect the dots here (I'm sure I'll learn more), but these dots seem to go: Kootenai refused to sign the treaty with the US that would have stripped their rights, held a peaceful war (civil disobedience and blocking traffic) to get rights without giving any up, and because of that got a significant amount of policing power, which has influenced settler policing.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that THESE particular cops are not bastards. Until I hear otherwise.

"The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho Police Department is a Community-Based Policing agency which prioritizes interaction and input from the Tribal Community to address issues which affect the lives of its members."

I see their cars out around town, btw. They were patrolling around the protest along with the sheriff.

  25. I'm both a city mouse and a country mouse.

I've got a soapbox to stand on one of these days about how city-folk can tend to be dismissive of rural people for lots of reasons that aren't founded in reality, and hold stereotypes that are damaging and unsupportive. And about how this is just as divisive and feeding into fascist narratives as the misinfo about cities is.

But maybe not today. Right there is the point, even if I'm not up to outlining the details rn. For now if you think you may have this bias, look inward and see what you find.

  26. K I've been defending rural people for at least a few years now, but I'm gonna go full gloves-off if anyone not actually rural flippantly, generically, without nuance or personal knowledge, disses, blames, or mocks rural communities and red states, particularly the people who live in them. (Criticizing governments and leadership, and particular individuals or organizations is of course ok!!)

    I looked into Edna's organization.

"In November of 1987, Miles contemplated relocating his 2,000-member Mountain Church congregation to [] County from Michigan where he held cross-burnings and hate rallies. In the early 1970’s, Miles was convicted and served time in prison for conspiring to bomb school buses in protest of school integration. In the 1980’s, his church was part of the white separatist movement which hoped to establish a whites-only society in the Pacific Northwest.

"In response, County commissioners, Sheriff, clergy and concerned citizens stood together in unity against white supremacy which led to the formation of the task force.

"Approximately forty concerned citizens from a wide variety of backgrounds drafted a letter that successfully convinced Miles his message of hate was not welcome in [] County. As an organized group the members' statement of purpose called for opposition to any group of persons espousing a way of life that includes hatred, bigotry or violence."

That's how it started... and it's still going.

The county south of here has a similar organization.

They're doing the work and hopefully soon I'll join them. We'd like some solidarity please.

  27. [Edit: Since this is making the rounds today, note that I wrote this in June. I haven't seen any cynical takes yet today, Oct 18.]

The cynical takes I'm seeing on here saying No Kings is pointless, ineffective, in cahoots with the evil Dems, blah blah, I've got strong words for you.

    1. DON'T SPILT. This goes BOTH WAYS. I won't split with you, so don't split with us. It takes allllllll kinds of action, and this is one which is accessible to far more people than whatever you're up to. Which I fully support, BTW, so just fucking stop with the divisiveness. I swear.

    2. Read this thread if you think No Kings is ineffective. I'm sorry but I'm gonna take it real personally when, if nothing else, No Kings today helped me meet allies deep in a red state, activists I can work with who have been doing a ton of tangible actions here for many years, and who would have my back. No Kings helped me, for once since Trump was elected, not feel personally in danger and totally alone. And then you go shitting on it. FFS.

    Don't spilt.

    I freaking swear.

  29. We talked about so much — I'm forgetting things.

The biggest outcome for me personally, is that I feel incredibly emboldened, far less isolated, and it's difficult to feel paranoid at this moment.

I told "Edna" that I felt really intimidated moving here and mentioned the HUGE "Entering Trump Country" sign (or something to that effect) coming into town on the south side. It is very large and professional; looks very much like an "official" city sign. She said they'd made a huge effort to get that taken down. The sign is on private property. They almost got local government or DOT to force the sign down, but by then it was firmly election season and they had no legal standing to do anything about it.

The sign did its job at intimidating me, but that power is diffused in me at least now that I know there was some controversy, and that there are people here who would defend me.

After Edna mentioned Pride (context of how police last year were protecting Pride goers against protesters — but no Pride this year 🥺), I came out to her as queer/trans but that I was laying low. The first person I've trusted with that here outside of my family.
