From now on, I declare the 20.7. to be the International Day of Credential Management Loop Prevention. Or Working title IDoCMLoP.

Why?

I found myself in the situation that I had forgotten my house keys in the boot of my car. and the car keys in my mailbox. so I needed one to get the other and was caught in a dependency loop. I got a roomie so I was fine and ... well. pick sets. BUT:

It got me thinking: how often do we put ourselves in situations like these with our IT tools... where the passphrase of our recovery key for our password manager was stored in the password manager because we forgot about it during a migration to another tool. and when we need it it might not only take a roomie but a state actor level cryptanalysis team(*) to retrieve our passwords ... in 100 years.

Maybe it is a good idea to take some time out of our day every now and then and look into our personal credential management practices and look for and mitigate these loops before they bite us. Especially all of us on team Neurospice.
